Some of the moves he used looked like Spear originals rather than Staff moves, but it could just be rolled together.

And Dedede has his trip attack, so they do have some degree of uniqueness at least.

Marx looks to have some Bomb-esque moveset and Gooey is... Whip? Parasol? Itself!?!?!?

No, but really, I can't tell what their movesets are inspired by.

I think the non-RTDL characters have unique movesets, or at least mish-mashes of existing ones rather than whole copies.

Gooey looks like he has whip along with the some of the attacks from his standard and helper copy abilities from Dreamland 3.

I do lots of stuff. The real question is am I any good at that stuff.

We could see a lot of characters return, like Ribbon, or Gryll, or Prince Fluff.

I do wonder how Prince Fluff's appearance would be translated to a proper model, though.

Maybe he'd be a proper ball of yarn?

As great as Ribbon would be, the fact that she got a cameo stone form probably means she won't make an appearance, like the Friends in 64.

True Arena wasn't that bad...until I ran into Galacta Knight(?). Only Goriath Ex and Metal General Ex gave me any trouble before that, and it wasn't much considering Metal General EX was split into two parts.

But fighting Galacta Knight made me realize most of the challenge in EX mode, for me at least, is pattern recognition. In "Adventure" to "Super Star"("Ultra" included) I remember basically reacting to most boss attacks as they happened. Every now and then there would be a surprise(Dark Mind's mirrors cut when broken), but nothing I didn't immediately figure out after seeing. I kept doing that in "Return To Dreamland" but Goriath EX is where I realized either my reflexes aren't what they used to or Hal has just started developing harder bosses. The timing on the Dhalsim punches I have a hard time getting(and he does it twice) and the hadoken spam I'm looking at like "how exactly am I supposed to dodge that?". Wait, why time or try to get to a gap when I can stand behind him?

To be honest, I kinda brute forced my way through the True Arena via Stone. Decent damage, invulnerability...the only catch is that you have to aim it just right.

Galacta Knight is, somewhat ironically, easier once he Turns Red; his attacks become grandiose, but that makes him more predictable than him just running up and stabbing your face.

I'm going to take another shot at him soon enough, but I just beat the regular arena just to make sure I wasn't imagining things. It almost felt unfair, everyone moving slower, giving a whole lot more time to hit them, not stunning as long the few times I did get hit, taking more damage(Metal General seems to take more damage anyway). Only Grand Doomer and Magolor took any sort of effort... but I suppose that's more than I can say for Marx, who seemed really wimpy after the "Ultra" true arena(not that he was ever tough to begin with)

And playing through it, I think I understand why Galacta Knight was added. The Arena and True Arena of Ultra mostly had different bosses. Aside from HRD3, the Return To Dreamland versions would otherwise be Hard Mode Filler.

It's become a tradition for The True Arena to have a boss completely exclusive to it. In Superstar Ultra, Triple Deluxe, and Planet Robobot it's a "hard mode" version of the final boss who was otherwise omitted from the actual "hard mode", but Return To Dreamland already featured Magolor Soul in its hard mode so instead we get Galacta Knight at round 13.

Kirby: Star Allies definitely seems to be a Contested Sequel compared to Return to Dreamland, Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot, if the reviews and fan reception I've seen on the internet are any indication. I personally dislike it, but it will be interesting to see others' opinions on the game here.

Thus far I just fought Flamberge for the second time and am ready to go into the big base thingy.

It definitely feels like the weakest of the four new-era Kirby games, but I haven't finished yet so we'll see. My biggest issue is that it's way too easy even by Kirby standards. I haven't died once nor have I ever had to replay a level due to missing any of the incredibly obvious secrets. Even Return to Dreamland got SOMEWHAT challenging by Egg Engines and Dangerous Dinner, but I'm just coasting through still. If I'm getting even remotely close to the endgame, it's also pretty short.

Still having fun though. Would probably be MORE fun with other players, but that's not an option for me.

I tired to get my friends to come over for the optimal experience, but my only options either didn't want to play or were busy.

So I guess I'm going alone.

[up][up]I think the lack of difficulty would be significantly less of a problem if you could play through the game without Friends. Very unfortunate that they decided to make them a requirement for most of the game's puzzles and even just getting through some levels.

I hope the Friends and co-op focus is a one time thing. Weird thing is, it's not even consistently co-op focused. A good chunk of the game's transformations (including the one you spend most of the final boss using) are controlled by a single player. It's like they couldn't decide which was more important between solo and multiplayer and both playstyles ended up suffering as a result.

Adding elements to weapons is wonderful, on the other hand. Spamming vertical bolts of lightning with Staff + Plasma is delightful. I hope that comes back without needing to wait a few seconds for a CPU buddy to give it to you.

I agree. Kirby being easy usually doesn't bother me because there are a lot of powers each with a lot of moves, so using enemies as punching bags takes a good while to get old. But with three other helpers also fighting enemies, there's less punching bag to go around.

I've been playing it with my two brothers. My biggest issue is how quickly bosses just melt with you've got three Kirby fans and a CPU beating the shit outta them. The high amount of damage bosses can rack up on you if you aren't careful doesn't really change much, and so far I haven't seen the full repertoire of a single bosses moveset because they usually die after throwing out one or two attacks during their Turns Red phase. Also, all the elemental abilities just clutter the screen with effects, making it hard to see the boss and your character.

We've only gotten the fourth? area (the Milky Way Wishes throwback/space map), so I'm hoping that EX mode, if there's one here, picks things up a bit. As is, I feel like Amazing Mirror and Return to Dreamland handled co-op better.

I hope the Friends and co-op focus is a one time thing.
I don't hope they're a one-time thing, but I do hope that they do better next time. Super Star, Dreamland 3, Amazing Mirror, and Return to Dreamland are all among my favorite Kirby games because I had a lot of fun playing them with my brothers/friends, making them unique experiences for me compared to the solo ventures. While I am having lots of fun with Star Allies, I feel like they really dropped the ball with the difficulty scaling, making it feel much more braindead than it should be.

I'm hoping that DLC or patches will address some of the issues.

I've been doing this game's True Arena equivalent with no Helpers lately; just me, all alone vs. the bosses. I just cleared it with the Parasol ability, one of my low-key favs.

You know what boss keeps getting cheap shots in on me? Hyness's first phase, of all fucking things. I guess I'm just slipping up and making errors in judgment because I don't take it seriously.

I'm having quite a good time with Star Allies. The complaint about the friends doing stuff for you is kind of true, but it does help me overcome my deficiencies. tongue The visuals are lovely, the music is great, and the world map and sense of progression are top notch.
