That was a pretty funny bait and switch in ma3 and SDB.

Matt is really an asshole. He asks for Gary's trust and talks about how close a bond they are going to have, when in fact he plans to humiliate him.

Matt is definitely being a class-A jerk generally in this sequence of strips, but his speeches in today's four frames are designed purely to set up the day's gag. I wouldn't generalise them beyond that.

Ever since Matt moved out (and possibly before then, we don't know), he hasn't really seemed like much of a friend.

He was never a close friend for Gary, but he talked Gary through his brief crisis over his sexual identity in a perfectly helpful way, despite Gary having interrupted him in the middle of sex with Senna.

He's not naturally such a horrible guy; he's arguably the only person in the history of Sticky Dilly Buns to have helped Ruby with one of her numerous problems, really usefully, without being a jerk towards her in the process, just out of natural helpfulness. He just has a monstrous ego which he sees Gary as threatening.

Zii came close to matching Matt there; to be honest, I'd say that she came out of that scene just about as well as he had earlier. But she was making a sale for the shop, and she did jump on one or two opportunities to tease Ruby to her face (whereas Matt kept a straight face until Ruby's back was turned). On the harshest possible reading, Matt treated Ruby better.

Gotta disagree. Friendly joking is nicer than laughing about someone behind their back.

But that's beside the point. Because Zii literally just did all that.

i'd hardly describe what Matt did as "laughing at her behind her back", except in the mildest sense. He just allowed himself a private smile once the scene was over.

But honestly, I'm not going to the wall on this one. Zii really did play her scene with Ruby right; reassured her, made friends with her, and treated her as an adult. She and Matt both reminded readers, in their scenes with Ruby, that most of the cast aren't bad people, most of the time — they just have a load of weird issues and impulses. But I said arguably; Zii veered slightly closer to the sort of bullying teasing that often makes Dillon such a pain in the arse, which could have left Ruby feeling that she was the butt of yet another round of freak-the-mundanes. Set the standards high enough and, well, Matt still has the best help/taunt ratio, if only because he had less time to make Ruby feel uncomfortable.

New Sandra..., and a new nameless character learns a lesson about New Age BS.

He was drunk when he did Senna. They would have reached that point if their tryst wasn't interrupted by the end of the flight.

Which was the joke. Senna assumed that Gary would enjoy what she planned to do to his butt, but never got the chance to try it; Gary, however, has always looked terrified by any hint of a threat to his back passage (except, weirdly, in the maybe-deuterocanonical "Christmas Future" strip), and no such threat has ever been carried out. He's, y'know, a very straight kinda guy.

I'm sorry, "new age BS"?

It has been a while since someone new has seen Sandra drunk. One of her bigger flaws is that she has never been able to hold her liquor.

"New Age" as in, you know, "New Age". "BS" as in "bull stuff".

And Sandra's only-intermittent hitting of the sauce is one of the curiosities of that comic, given that it's actually named in honour of her boozing.

No, I know what the terms mean. I just wanted to be sure that you assumed it was "New Age BS" instead of an actual, stated intent to be closer to her heritage.

Her first sentence is fine. I have no issues with her first sentence. Her second sentence, "I'm a very spiritual person, you know?" lets off a BS alert klaxon next to my ear. Her third sentence does not help.
