Wikileaks, fucking up the American Empire for "good" AND "bad"

In this case, hacker anarchism is more of a pose than a principle. Assange's activism is not directed at revealing the secrets of the United Nations or of journalistic organizations. It is guided by antipathy for America. The United States, in Assange's view, is an "authoritarian conspiracy" that should be crippled by disrupting its flow of information.

Bull. Assange is against ALL forms of government oppression of cyberspace, and anarchism in cyberspace is a strong principle that people have shown a high willingles to risk things for it. He considers ANY government to be inherently a conspiracy that can suppress freedoms and would treat ANY government the same way. Assange is not biased against the US, he has released blocklists on Italian/Daniah/Australian government plans. If information on Mugabe's questionable activities is released to wikileaks, Assange will release that. If it was information on the French government's fucking of Africa, he'd do that. IF it's information on Russia/Chechnya, again the same. He treats and considers any government to be a threat, he only currently has a LOT of data coming out of the American Empire

You're ignoring the meat of the argument, which is about the effect of the leaks on Zimbabwe.

And I'd take you more seriously if you stopped using the phrase "American Empire".

The thing about Mugabe is that Wikileaks, an organization devoted to exposing information, really can't do much to hurt him. Everybody knows he's an asshole. Either that or they are a supporter of his and won't believe what other Zimbabweans say about their glorious President, much less what some snotty foreigner with a fancy website has to say.

Assange's model, as necessary as it is in other cases, just isn't designed to deal with Mugabes.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

[up][up]The problem isn't that he's failing to criticize Mugabe. It's that he's leaking information that helps Mugabe.

At least it brought attention to the situation. Tropico protagonists should be held accountable, and information disclosure allows the public to be aware of the status of the game everywhere. It's as if, for one turn, the Fog of War was lifted and all the map was revealed.

Rhodesia was a pretty cool place back in the day.

I've been bugging my buddy to send me one of those Be a man among men shirts for a while now. Rhodesians are pretty bad ass; I can actually understand them unlike S. Africans.

Seriously now; are they still working that power sharing deal between Mugabe and Tsvangirai?

So a politician who lies to his people (being against sanctions in the open, but for it behind closed doors) gets exposed and that's bad? Not to defend Mugabe here, I consider him an asshole, but defending someone who lies to the public isn't very democratic either.

You should read about the Selout Scouts, Kino.

@Scrye: Already did man; they did some amazing stuff during the war. There was a book about how Rhodesian created a system to fight the insurgents; Sealous Scouts tracking them, RLI dropping in; rinse and repeat. I really need to go through my library and find the name of the book.
