Metroid just isn't a spinoff-worthy franchise. It's just too rigid.

I mean, I would have never trusted Metroid to some random Texas developers who couldn't get any projects off the ground, but that worked out pretty well. It's certainly possible MS or Platinum or whoever could make a great Metroid if given the chance and guidance. But I could say that for just about any developer with a good track record, so unless they have specific experience with something related to Metroid I don't see a particular reason to single out any specific studio.

[up]Liking the studio? That it's certainly a possibility when Nintendo owns said studio and isn't currently working on anything at the moment other than Breath of the Wild which should be wrapping up for them.

Fair enough, but Monolith almost certainly began working on the next Xeno game as soon as X was finished. Between Zelda, Xeno, and whatever other projects they're helping, I doubt they have the manpower for Metroid. Now if Takahashi decides he wants his next epic sci-fi adventure to to take place in the Metroid universe things would get more interesting, but I find that very unlikely.

I suppose my issue is that I don't personally see Monolith being more suited for the series than say, HAL Laboratory or Intelligent Systems. Both of whom I would easily give approval for 2D Metroid. Heck, IS could probably do 3D Metroid seeing how ridiculously diverse their talent appears to be.

[up] Considering Kirby's Dreamland 3 had Metroids and Samus in it, it would be ironic if they were the ones to make a new Metroid game.

[up][up][up][up][up] What's with Japanese developers kissing Western ass these days? Kojima, Inafune, Takahashi, Kamiya... Japan use to be the kings of console gaming in Gens 3, 4, 5 and 6.

Cost explosions with the rise of HD gaming brought out the weaknesses in the Japanese development model. Western developers were moderately more flexible and able to adapt faster, so things ended up equalizing some.

The Japanese market for consoles drying up hasn't helped things.

Personally, I still think Japan makes some of the most unique and fun games, especially in this generation. And the only Japanese dev I've seen who openly dislikes and despairs over the current Japan game industry and wants everything Westernized is Inafune. All those other devs merely take what some Western games do well while adding a distinctly Eastern touch to their games, which makes them work.

For the record, Capcom did make officiate a Mega Man fan game. All I could see an official Nintendo Another Metroid II Remake release changing is some of the flavor text, the appearances of some bosses who are not Metroids, and most obviously the title.

I hate that IP has become a buzzword(buzz monogram? buzz initialism?) in online forum culture. It has to stop. Retro Studios started out making "new IPs" and every last one of them was canceled or meddled with and then canceled. And I'm not saying Nintendo shouldn't accept a new IP from a foreign studio, I personally wish they'd do something else with Eternal Darkness or Geist, but dusting off dust collecting Nintendo titles is the only reason we've ever gotten to see Retro's work. They're not a board for which to throw wishful thinking at like darts.

Not to mention that new I Ps or drastically changing things of an already existing IP doesn't automatically mean that it's going to be good or a success, as Paper Mario fans are able to attest.

Sometimes I want to go back in time to those people who were like "They're only doing the same boring crap, change it up a little!" and slap them across the face with the Sticker Star box.

I don't think the Paper Mario Franchise can recover, I bet money that whatever happened in the development of sticker star costed nintendo a few writers.

But enough about that, this is a metroid thread. Metroid Prime was a pretty good spinoff of the series, So things can change without screwing over the series.

I don't know if I'd call Metroid Prime a spinoff. For one thing it has just as many games as the classic Metroid style. It's also not too much of a departure from the classic series. It's mostly just classic Metroid in 3D.

Metroid Prime isn't a spinoff, it's a Gaiden Game that Nintendo was ready to disown because of all the negative feedback it got but was ready to turn into its own series when people instead decided they loved it and Nintendo was able to sell many copies of it.

Metroid Prime Pinball and Metroid Prime: Federation Force are spinoffs, while Metroid Prime: Hunters is a gaiden game of a gaiden game...the existence of the former Pinball I use to back up my position that there would not be so much negativity surrounding Federation Force if it was simply released at the originally intended time, on the first DS. I'm sure people wouldn't like it too much, I'd probably be one of the chief complainers, but I probably would dis it anymore than I do "Zero Mission", which despite not being what I wanted, is still a good game.

Paper Mario despite the backlash can still get some sells. I think Metroid is own life support.

Federation Force didn't fail because people don't like Metroid anymore. It failed because it was a poorly presented, uninspired spin-off that nobody wanted.

I feel a little bad for NLG- From a technical perspective, they made a fine enough game The design just didn't follow through.

It's a shame that Recore isn't doing too good. Not that I think its floundering will have any adverse effect on the series (Inafune's reputation, on the other hand...), but having a successful sci-fi action-adventure game with a female protagonist out in the market might have helped motivate someone at Nintendo to give the series another chance, especially in light of FF's failure.

Man, I feel really bad for Mark Pacini and everyone at Armature Studio. Recore was supposed to be their first big break.

I'm a bit disappointed that Recore's not doing great as well, but it's important to remember that Recore is a new IP, Metroid is an established one. Even if its last two games, one mainline and a spinoff didn't get good receptions, the series isn't dead.

Hey, so just a thought. With all the somersaulting and wall jumping Samus does, it's safe to say that her agility is on par with Spider-Man right?

I'd be comfortable putting her in Spider-Man's weight class more generally, even without her armor.

I'm not sure Samus is quite as agile as Spider-man, since she climbs up ledges fairly slow compared to him. But with the space jump she doesn't necessarily need to be as agile. Samus is easily superior in most aspects as along as her suit stays upgraded.

If she could fly on her own, she'd border on being a Flying Brick with the suit.

Even without it, she's at least tough enough to stop a robbery in progress or similar and fast enough to get to it in time.

I sure said that!
