...^ Ugh! I watched the first two chapters of that and it was atrocious. In Name Only doesn't even begin to describe it!
...all Final Fantasy games are in name only. There's really nothing that carries over between them other than mascot animals.
There are reoccurring things such as the usage of spheres or crystals as important plot devices, class names and outfits as well as their function, the arpeggio, in some cases battle systems. There lots of things that make something say "FINAL FANTASY" other than the title.
There is also what Kerrah mentioned.

If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan Chah^^ But the problem is that the wretched 4-part Anime OVA, Final Fantasy: The Legend of the Crystals, is meant to be a direct sequel to Final Fantasy V. And yet the setting is entirely different, there aren't any job classes, the Void and Exdeath are never mentioned and other changes that make it look like a Dolled-Up Installment.
So yeah, do your studies before calling me out on my hypocricy, ignoramus.

^^ Those things are entirely optional. While some games have them, others don't. There's really no consistency.
^ I apologize, and in fact realized my mistake shortly after posting that when it appeared that the link went directly the Final Fantasy V. However, I was also responding directly to the topic itself, in that Final Fantasy, as the entire series, tends to lack the consistency that would make it meaningful to be a TV series.
No they don't all always carry over. There aren't always crystals. Sometimes there's spheres. There aren't always classes. Sometimes there are characters with one role that more or less is a pre-existing class. They do lack a total sense of consistency, but there are reoccurring elements besides the moogles and chocobo who aren't in every game either. Yes Final Fantasy's are often quite different, but there's enough to be able to say that they have more connecting them than their name.
If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahA healer without a hood is just a healer. They may fill the white mage role, but they also fill the role of a healer that is in pretty much every RPG. Crystals and such have basically been entirely phased out from the main series for over a decade except for explicit throwbacks. People who've grown up on Final Fantasy may not even recognize them. They're certainly not important to the series.
They're not terribly important, but they're there and things that do in a very horrible way connect the series.
If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahSpell names, moogles, chocobos, airships, Cid, a number of monsters, summons, and weapon names. Those are the things that almost always cross over. And the anime attempts have still missed most of those.
I forgot to mention the Cids and spell names which do carry over in more or less every installment. And that other stuff.

To be fair, most of them would sound pretty lame if spoken by the characters.
I wouldn't mind a bit of a departure from the original spell names to make it sound good - and it IS possible to make a good Final Fantasy based anime, if made by someone competent who knows how to turn a game into a successful anime without upsetting the fans.

Requiem ~ September 2010 - October 2011 [Banned 4 Life]????
Trans rights are human rights.I always thought you could make a decent FF anime if it was done like a long running shounen series - with a bit more plot.
I'd love to see anothe FF anime as long as its not Final Fantasy VII. I mean I love the game but it already had two OV As and a Movie. I'd prefer to see an anime of Final Fantasy X
I've always though the setting of FF VIII would make an awesome backdrop for a series. Not the game's plot mind you, the setting. Garden is basically Rowling's Hogwarts meets Cards's Battle School. They give teenagers the power of gods for expressed purpose of making child soldiers out of them, and purposelessly pick orphans so there are no parents around to object. Yes, there's the distant goal of 'See D's are trained to defeat sorceress', but how many years and generations would go by between evil sorceress? The game itself had to send you into the the Past (via Ellone) and Future (via time compression) to find ones to fight! So that in the meantime See D is basically for-hire military force consisting of 16-year-olds whom can summon the All-Father to do their bidding, who can show up in your sovereign nation and fuck shit up because someone paid them to. While also dealing, or should I say not dealing with the natural stresses of both adolescence and military life. It writes itself.
Give it to Joss Whedon, then sit back and enjoy the awesome.

Come on, not even Whedon can make FFVIII's plot good.
INT is knowing a tomato is a fruit. WIS is knowing it doesn't belong in a fruit salad. CHA is convincing people that it does.Reading comprehesion fail. I specifically said not to use the game's plot, just its setting.
Also Joss can making anything work. Except Wonder Woman, apparently. Kinda ironic given his past work.

Ah, creator fanboying aside, I think FFVIII can prove a good setting.
Of course, FF's world building in general is much better than its story.
INT is knowing a tomato is a fruit. WIS is knowing it doesn't belong in a fruit salad. CHA is convincing people that it does.Case in point: Final Fantasy XII
"There are reoccurring things such as the usage of spheres or crystals as important plot devices"
Spheres are Crystals, Magicite too. They just have different names.
Actually Crystals are still pretty important to the series. They may not fill the generic "something something destined warriors" role, but they are usually important to the way the worlds function.

Umbran Climax◊
What would be some good episode titles?
Now I know XIII already has chapter titles of their own but the rest of the games are free. So be creative ^^.
