(This seemed like the most logical place to post this.)

So, my Wii's not working right. It'll play Game Cube games just fine, but it won't play any Wii game at all aside from Sam And Max Season Two (Season One and New Super Mario Bros Wii were working for a while, too, but they don't any more).

With some games, it'll show up on the Disc Channel, but give me a disc read error when I actually try to play it.

I bought a Wii Cleaning Kit, but it doesn't seem to be helping any, unless I'm doing it wrong.

What do you guys think?

My Wii's disk drive broke once. I had to send it to Nintendo to get it fixed, only for the memory on the console to get corrupted, forcing me to reformat it.

Well, back up the memory, then send it to Nintendo. Unless you have some illegal stuff on there.

You got some dirt on you. Here's some more!

All my data is legally acquired, although I don't wanna send it in to Nintendo unless it's as a last resort. I'm a bit worried about spending $80 and losing 4 years of saves (especially with games that aren't SD transferable).

I'm gonna keep trying with the Cleaning Kit for now.

As someone who has 2 Wii consoles, and has tried to play on a friend's Wii using my own data via SD card, I can tell you that if you do have to get a new console, you won't be able to transfer your save data. The SD card is apparently just used as a memory expansion for the Wii and all the data seems to be locked to that console. The D Si has the same problem (went through 3 of those).

Except that with the Wii, if you're not worried about the legal implications, you can still jailbreak the console, dump the NAND memory to the SD card and store the saves safely away, and then inject them into the NAND of the new console. This is all theoretically possible. It's not applicable for the D Si simply because nobody has bothered to crack its NAND routines yet (since it's not necessary for homebrew and homebrew is the only driving force behind any and all real jailbreak efforts for any console).

Videogames do not make you a worse person... Than you already are.
