Super Smash Bros.

I'd need an example of that. I don't follow sports often. But I rarely hear or read any sort of internet meme, or conversation between people who do follow about the "dark/gold/platinum age" of football. Wrestling is the only sport I know of that dramatizes it's history this way, and well, wrestling itself is a massive dramatization - heels and faces and wrestling storylines, it's meant to have a dramatic narrative, that's the point.

What about Starcraft? Pokemon? Yugioh? League of Legends? You never see those metagames transformed in this way. Heck if any game would have changed the face of competitive gaming I would've thought it'd have been either Street Fighter or LOL/DOTA.

uh, yeah. Because none of them changed the face of competitive whatever. Melee did.

And you do see League dramatized in this way- especially given that it's become a huge esport that (iirc) even ESPN has started commenting on.

It's possible for more than one game to change the face of competitive gaming, you know.

I don't get why you're making such a big deal out of this anyway.

How so?

It brought in a ton of new people to the competitive scene (due to Smash Bros having a wider appeal than Street Fighter), helped bring competitive gaming to media attention (due to the amount of hype constantly surrounding SSB at the time), and increased respect for competitive gaming in general given the huge amount of skill required to play Melee at a competitive level.

Though the most important aspect it changed (and the most impact it had) was changing how fighting games in general are viewed- before Melee not a lot of games outside of the traditional 2D fighters got respect since they weren't, well, traditional 2D fighters.

Let's not oversell this game; the Super Smash Bros. competitive scene is rather small in the large scheme of things, not really showing up in the general radar after Brawl was released, sold like hotcakes, and changed up the gameplay to the dislike of many a competitive Smash player.

If anything I'm sure it was things like Starcraft and Counter Strike 1.6 that brought competitve scenes to larger niche masses, and then League of Legends and DOTA made competitive gaming explode with the public at large.

So, I see model imports for Smash mods are appearing, and they look pretty clean.

I'm excited to see what this brings in the future.

If this means I can have SSB for Wii U models in Gmod I'll be happy.

Considering how fast Splatoon and Hyrule Warriors' were moved there, I'm a little shocked it hasn't happened already.

I haven't looked for Splatoon, but I've only seen one HW model (Darunia) and only SSB for 3DS models (Shulk, and maybe a few others). No Wii U ones.

I know that there have been a lot of problems with importing/exporting models, so the fact that we're finally managing to do so makes me happy.

I wonder if we're going to get a huge overhaul like with Project M.

Huh, browsing the Steam Workshop, it seems a good number of Wii U SSB models are uploaded. Not all of them yet, though.

Now we just need some stages and items and I can make ridiculous screenshots. And if I ever get any decent movie-making software, ridiculous gmod animations.

I don't see another Project M type mod/game happening. That was made largely because of how disliked Brawl was by the competitive scene. Smash 4 has a much stronger and better meta than Brawl ever did.

Maybe- but if people want Sm4sh to be more like Melee (which isn't an uncommon sentiment) I could see it happening.

But I do agree that sm4sh having a stronger metagame might prevent another PM from happening.

Still, I'd like a nice overhaul for everything- PM had a lot of features that I enjoyed.

If I was better at this sort of stuff I'd do it myself.

Maybe someone could put an actual Ridley model over Charizard (there is Ridley mod, but it's a heavily re-textured Charizard and looks awkward) and put and actual Isabelle model over Villager (same situation as Ridley.)

What I'm really waiting for is for this one user to finish importing the SSB 64 models to Sm4sh. I can't wait to play as 64 Link or 64 Pika

Knowing me, I'd make an Inu Yasha skin for either Ike or Cloud.

And someone should make a Goku skin for Ryu.

Can someone make a mod swapping around various characters' models, but done so that it looks natural? I want stuff like Captain Falcon with Peach's moveset, or Ryu, crawling around with Duck Hunt's moveset.

People have done that, but it doesn't look natural in most cases. Like all those creepy Bayonetta swaps.

Next thing i know someone makes a mod that turns all the fighters into cats.

Just regular house cats. Well, maybe giant cats to fit the models, but still.

And Luke Skywalker could work as a skin for Link?
