I think they have a (digital?) bundle version of sorts that does both, or a extra episode that ties them together, or something.
EDIT: Or maybe that's what I was thinking of, I haven't followed it too closely.

I'd say go with Birthright if you're inexperienced with FE, yeah.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.So, I guess I'm gonna have to do some research about Fates before buying.
You know, I have to wonder why Pit is obsessed with this site. It’s gonna ruin his life! Here's the short version:
Birthright: A more beginner-friendly game dealing with a peaceful kingdom fighting back invaders. Grinding is possible with or without DLC.
Conquest: For more experienced players with a story from the viewpoint of the aformentioned invading kingdom. Grinding is only possible with DLC.
Revelations: Side with neither kingdom and go on your own. Grinding is possible with or without DLC.
If you buy digitally, you choose who to side with after a certain chapter and download that side for free and you can buy the other two at a lower price later on. Otherwise, you choose the route at the store but you can still buy the other two routes at the same price as if you got it digitally. Revelations will not be available at launch without the Special Edition.

This song needs more love.I think the path choice happens at chapter 9 or 10.
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with? There's two normal versions of Fates: Birthright and Conquest. You get one of them on the cartridge at standard price, but you can download the other one as DLC at a discounted price, so the only real choice is which one you want to play first. There's also a third route that's DLC-only.
If you're REALLY lucky you could try and get the Special Edition. It's a single cartridge that comes with all three routes built in, but they sold out back in November and have had extremely small and infrequent restocks. I'd recommend it if you can find it somehow, though.
But if you're new to the series and cannot get the Special Edition, go with Birthright and get Conquest later as a download. Don't buy both in physical format, it's a waste of money and you miss out on connective benefits.
You could also get the download version, which gives you the first six chapters then makes you pick Birthright or Conquest.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!Alright, I'll probably go with Birthright then. I probably could figure out the other one, but I play games to relax, not spend half an hour optimizing everybody.

The "core" Fire Emblem experience (IE, most games excluding 2, 8, 13 and 14 Birthright) are as much about managing experience and dealing with lucky or unlucky character growths as much as the tactics themselves. Resource management is a big element of most of the games — there's only so much experience, gold and weapons to go around, and if you focus on only a few strong units you may well find yourself in deep shit later on in the game.

You know, I have to wonder why Pit is obsessed with this site. It’s gonna ruin his life!Well, I know what I'm getting.
You know, I have to wonder why Pit is obsessed with this site. It’s gonna ruin his life!Ah, expanding people's horizons; this is surely the true meaning of TV tropes.
The only Fire Emblem I ever played was Radiant Dawn.
I was young, and did not understand tactics. At all. Never even got far enough to see Ike.
Well, Radiant Dawn is a sequel, so...
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.Ban Corrin?
Heh, interesting. Think that'll get patched out in the next update?
Or Bayo's 'jedi kick'?
That'll depend on if we get another update.
We will.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.I dunno how long they'll keep doing patches, but I'm sure we'll get at least one more balance update at some point now that all the DLC has been released.
Jedi kick?
There was a little vid where Bayonetta used up-tilt/smash (dunno) and kicked the air, but somehow hit the other fighter far enough away that there wasn't reason to expect it'd have hit. Someone else linked a starwars video (episode 6 I think) video where Luke was supposed to have kicked a mook, but obviously didn't connect and he still went flying.
The name amused me
Nope. You buy one storyline, then can buy the other two at a discounted price.
