I just figured it was because he was...you know, cartoony. Cartoonier than Big Link, anyway.
"We're home, Chewie."Yeah, no one was really wondering.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectYeeaaaaah, that much is obvious. I just think it... sounds dumb. Dumber than "Young Link" anyway.
Another thing I found that might be potentially a little interesting is Robin's description saying that because you can customize his appearance in the original game, they chose to show him wearing a hood in the trailer. If they specifically took that into account, even though the in-game footage shows his default appearance... maybe it might hint towards letting you customize their appearance in Smash Bros, too? *shrugs*
Or it's one of his/her costumes. Alts are pretty popular now.
It's likely a similar approach to the Villager will be taken, combining various classes, faces and hairstyles which Robin can have for their costumes. In any case, I hope that one of them uses this particular style, preferably in red◊. A Katarina◊ alt would be a nice addition as well.
...If different hair colors and styles are awailable, they will be a part of Robin's color alts. Robin's alt is almost certainly F!Robin.
Fantastic Supreme Überkaiser Emperor Folt of The Infinity and Beyond" ... "The First"!New alternate color for Kirby found in Nintendo Dream magazine.◊ It's Meta Knight unmasked.
Now all we need is a Kirby costume for Meta-Knight.

Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!Looks too dark to be Meta Knight.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique! It's not "unmasked Meta Knight" as much as "the part of Meta Knight seen through the mask".
Trans rights are human rights.Huh? No, that's actually what Meta Knight looks like under his mask. You unmask him in a couple of Kirby games. Well, it's a bit too dark but not by a great deal when compared to his earliest appearance, I think.

Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!Meta Knight is a blue Kirby with white eyes without his mask. The costume is black with yellow eyes.
Trans rights are human rights.Nah. Meta Knight's eyes only glow yellow through his mask, without they're more like Kirby's. And Kirby's skintone is way too dark to be Meta Knight in that pic. I mean, look, the real deal is right there, compare his blueness to Kirby's blackness/dark-purpleness.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!...Meta Knight is right there and it's pretty clear that Kirby is in Meta Knight colors. Same body color (abit under the mask for Meta Knight), same eye color, heck, Kirby's shoes are purple like Meta Knight's boots!
Yes, in the games, Meta Knight turns/is revealed to be blue when unmasked, but since he doesn't do that here, having Kirby be colored like masked Meta Knight gets the reference across better.

Don't PM me. We don't like being PMed.I'm thinking about his appearance in Kirby's Adventure where I'm pretty sure he was black. In fact, I have artwork◊ to prove it.
For the finishing blow, have a screen cap.◊

Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!Uh, nobody's arguing that that's not what the palette is based on. Calm down.
Early-Installment Weirdness. He's black there. He's not in every subsequent game.

Trans rights are human rights.Meta Knight doesn't "turn blue" when he loses his mask. You can pretty clearly see he's blue by looking around his mask. The mask just casts a shadow over his face.
I don't think it's meant to be a Meta Knight costume, just a dark version of Kirby.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!Okay, but there's still no need to get all snippy...
I kind of doubt it's just a coincidence, mind. There are definite similarities.

Trans rights are human rights.x4 I'm not saying he isn't. I'm saying that it is unmasked Meta Knight. It's just the original version instead of the subsequent ones.

Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!So it's a reference to some Early-Installment Weirdness. Not unreasonable.
I have a message from another time...I can buy that, sure.
Trans rights are human rights. It's basically the same as Wire-frame Little Mac.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!
If all else fails. Probably not an entirely satisfactory solution however.
In other news, so far the most interesting thing I learned from these scans is that Toon Link's weird name is justified by the fact that, apparently, his rendering style is called "toon rendering" in Japan.
