It's about bloody time.

I bet Australia is really glad to be shot of Michael Atkinson.

With cannon shot and gun blast smash the alien. With laser beam and searing plasma scatter the alien to the stars.

Depends.

If this is going to make those games impossible or nigh impossible to get, I'm very against it. If it makes them more available, as long as the purchaser has an ID or something, than that's fine with me.

[up] Considering that previously the games that would have been subjected to such a rating were banned outright (at least to my understanding), I don't see how it could make it harder.

So yeah, awesome, Australia's finally abandoning their censorship policies. Guess that means this piece of shit is gone too, good riddance.

Look, you can't make me speak in a logical, coherent, intelligent bananna.

So...............does this mean Left 4 Dead will finally have blood?

Australia have always amused me...they have the worst of US, Japan, and Africa, combined, with none of their good points.

They have US's level crazy anti-sex bs, their aversion to violence is really Japanese, and their wildlife are born to make human life miserable like the ones in Africa...to the point where their '''cutest''' animal happens to have POISONOUS SPURS on them!

And the only notable Australian(to the rest of the world) was killed by a sting ray.

They really can't catch a break can they?

We don't actually ban games here, but being refused classification means the game can't be distributed, so it's a de facto ban, or the game gets changed to kick it down to an M rating. It's still legal to buy and possess games from overseas, even if they've been refused classification.

It's about time we got an R18+ rating for games. The legislators finally get that games aren't just for kids. I hope, anyway.

^ Do you really think Australia is worse than friggin' Africa?sad

There has been pushes to get the R18+ rating in place for years now, but they need the grand slam of every single State Attorney General on side before it can pass. For years it was SA AG Michael Atkinson holding things up, but now he's gone Western Australia are starting to put the frighteners on their AG (not sure what's going on there myself).

In the mean time, the Classification Board seem to be getting more lax about what they let through - they're probably fed up with the whole business themselves. What this means is that more and more risque stuff is being released under MA 15+, completely defeating the purpose of the whole ratings system. If they would only allow R18+, then a lot of the more extreme games would be restricted to adults only instead of sneaking through on a lower rating. It's a right mess.

Box Jelly Fish and Blue Ring Octopuses. I fear these guys more than Lions and elephants whose parents were murdered when they were young and now grown old and vengeful.

It'll be good to see this particular battle won, but the victory is more moral than anything at this point. Was anyone really dying to see Baise Moi?

The danger of our wildlife has been greatly exaggerated, with the exception of the drop bears. Those really are as deadly as everyone says.

Australia, from what I've gathered from the badassoftheweek.com article on it, is pretty much a far less lethal version of Catachan and without all the jungle.

[up][up] I don't think a flamethrower would be a very good idea. The bushfires are even more deadly than the wildlife.

Not for nothing, does Australia have its own section on Everything Trying to Kill You.

I always found it interesting that Australias fauna seems to be proof that God exists, and that he hates us. Or that Australia is just a small scale Death World.

This sounds like good news for Australia, and bad news for online game sellers.

While the introduction of a R18+ classification is good news for Australia, I don't think it will do anything for the fact that new games locally still cost approx. US$100. tongue

Here's the wikipedia page on it[1]... If your in that sort of thing.

*ahem*

Re-Rail: Back on the games, This may be a case of 'you can't miss what you don't have' but while I don't think that it's good that video games should be denied a 18+ rating. I can't say that not having it is really that much of a loss for the average gamer. Remember an R rating in Oz isn't like the R in the USA. To get an R rating in film at least you have normally got to have some pretty sick stuff.

Yeah - to get beyond a MA15+ rating in Australia these days a game needs to have something like scenes of drug taking, pornographic material or over-the-top excessive violence. They seem to be getting more lenient in what the let through too - there were scenes in Red Dead Redemption that I doubt would have made it past the board five years ago. It's rare for a game that actually seems worth playing to be refused classification. It's mostly now a) the principle of the thing and b) having a better classification system so titles that would be better served by being R18+ aren't lumped in with MA15+ ones.
