Chen - Heir to a Forgotten Legacy

Many years ago in Gensokyo, a lonesome and forgotten youkai came across a cat. At the time, it was a normal black cat, spending it's time wandering the forest. It was one of the many feral cats that lived in Gensokyo, doing what cats do, though this meeting was different than usual. The cat was injured, no doubt from a fight with another cat. So, this forgotten youkai took the cat, and cared for her. In gratitude, the cat ran off into the forest again. Poor forgotten youkai...

As time passed though, the cat returned. When the forgotten youkai noticed, she started leaving food for the cat. Naturally, this caused the cat to return more often, and linger around. Over time, this cat became used to getting regular meals, and the youkai took her in. She named the cat after herself, using a character from her native language, Chen. They spent the years together, and with the years came changes. The cat became a youkai cat, and so the youkai owner had to adapt. She gave her some hand-me-down clothes, and began to devise a scheme. Something that will make people finally remember her name.

She let Chen run around and do what she did best, getting into trouble, though now it was with other youkai instead of cats. The normally doting youkai that cared for her pet cat immensely took a sideline as she watched her now youkai pet get herself into fights and quarrels, all as part of her plan. She made care to ensure that Chen's clothes always reflected her own style, and taught Chen some of her language. As time passed, some character traits began to impress on the young nekomata, until one fateful day when the forgotten youkai found her pet injured again. This time, however, she wasn't left lying alone. A well dressed kyubi stood near the wounded cat, and greeted the forgotten youkai. When the owner drew near, the fox asked her about the cat. The owner was surprised to hear that her pet attacked the woman, and was beaten, but was even more surprised over the question.

"Do you mind if I take her as my familiar?" the woman had asked. The owner couldn't believe it, her little youkai getting to serve a powerful kyubi as a familiar? This would no doubt make her a well known and feared youkai! It was the perfect chance to finally have people remember her, and agreed hastily. She gave her proper farewells, of course, as a caring owner, but the fulfillment of her plan was too great to resist. It was all perfect, in her mind. Her pet dressed like she did, spoke like she did, and even acted like her in some ways. Surely everyone would remember her now!

They didn't. Nobody remembers Orange, and now Chen has all the popularity and attention she wishes she had, but will never get. Poor little forgotten youkai...

Reading her PCB dialogue, it's kinda surprising that Chen was made into such a moeblob. She doesn't sound particularly childish, and as it's been pointed out she's got a few decades under her belt, even if she's young in youkai terms. Then later stuff comes along and confirms her childishness (like the Village of Cats thing), though I wonder if that was intended or a case of ZUN agreeing with fans.

Art dump, purposefully avoiding cutesy young Chen:

If I remember correctly, there's an OC somewhere with a few followers, Chen's future shikigami. I think she was a tanuki, which is a bit odd considering what those critters are known for.

Oh yes, and here's a rocking Chen theme medley. As opposed to the Smoooochen medley.

There were some comments earlier about Ran being a supporting character for Chen. I don't believe that's accurate; rather, the two are a duo. I say this because I attempted to do a pic dump of my own, and failed miserably. Chen is in plenty of images, but the vast majority are group pics, comics, or otherwise not something where the focus is entirely on her

Not a bad comic, if memory serves
Not a bad comic indeed. I can recommend it. And since Morino Hon has an excellent art style that seamlessly combines cuteness and coolness, at least one of his drawings needs to be included in the write-up.

At least.

... It's probably bad form to ask this, but it just occurred to me; is Mode's write-up at the top of the page meant seriously or not?

... Not that there would be anything wrong with it either way! I'm just wondering is all!

Chen, Chen, Chen....

Chen is like a Shounen Hero to me, or, to narrow it down, like Negi. Both are plucky, quick, use dark magic depsite not being evil at all, and are quite young compared to their peers.

Chen is a plucky girl—she follows her own ideals and beliefs, even as Ran tries to educate her about the world. Don't get me wrong, Chen is interested about the world, but she sometimes finds Ran's ideas to be old-fashioned and quite often boring. Chen is not a Moe shy girl. She's a feisty Action Girl intent on having tons of fun and living life like it's an extreme rollercoaster ride. Fighting is definitely up her alley.

Of course, Chen isn't perfect either. She's sometimes surprisingly dumb, and quite often is not sure of what to do in a situation. Then she just lets blind instinct guide her, even if that's not the best solution in the world. Let it be known, however, that Chen has determination. Lot's of dtermination. She won't give up no matter what happens to her. She simply loves to have fun. Fighting to her is fun.

She excels more in Martial Arts than in Danmaku.

quote time:

"I've not even started yet! I don't back down from anything!"

"It doesn't matter how much you're hurt; even if your arms fall off and you're tired, you just have to keep on going! Giving up is not an option!"

"I'm always yelling, but does anyone even listen to me?"

"Ugh, Ran-Sama, you are so old-fashioned and boring! You have such outdated ideals, who would even listen to someone like you talk?"

"Yukari-Dono can be quite nice if you get on her side...but I'm always waking her up and annoying her~ Her yelling is so funny~"

Power level in Ea CM: 5000

This makes the Yakumo family:

Yukari:12,000
Ran:10,000
Chen:5000

I also have to say that I approve of Chen as a martial artist, given how well it fits with the image suggested by the picture that I linked above which can also be currently seen in my avatar which unfortunately is not ideal because Morino Hon's art unfortunately does not scale down very well.

Dot.

But I disapprove of the idea that being a cool street-fighter precludes being cute which I think I got from your post and possibly some others because I do not believe that these things are mutually exclusive and in fact posit that they are two flavors that taste great together as one might say in a figurative manner of speaking!

Chen's Chinese. Of course she know martial arts, due to the long established stereotypes. Also, she tends to bounce around the screen whenever you fight her. She'd definitely an "active" type of fighter, as opposed to just sitting the back shooting butterflies.

And now I want her in a fighting game, too.

...

Although that would entail seeing Chen get beaten up.

Now that would be a source of memes waiting to happen.

I wasn't saying Chen wasn't cute. She is, what I meant was that she's not just some moe girl who just looks cute and nothing else like a lot of people think.

And yeah, Show, Don't Tell. My writing sometimes slips up,

The cute is verily manifold and elusive! I shall make it my life's goal to find, name and define all the various forms of cuteness, so that misunderstandings about one's stance on the adorable may be a thing of the past!

I wasn't saying Chen wasn't cute. She is, what I meant was that she's not just some moe girl who just looks cute and nothing else like a lot of people think.

Unfortunately, that's pretty much my opinion on her. She's basically the fandom's memetic Moe Moe Cat Girl. Even though I usually like catgirls, she just feels shallow somehow. And ever since Orin showed up, my interest in Chen greatly diminished.

That is not to say that I don't care for any of the write-ups she's gotten so far. As always, they're good and I'm honestly surprised myself; I wasn't expecting Chen to get much mileage.

Bocaj: Ran doesn't look that cute, at least to me...

I'd imagine Ran being more like Litchi; smart, a mentor to another character, and BOOBIES

No, no. THIS is a fun tangent.

Hmmm. I do have to admit that the common Chenominator in the fandom seems to be that she's a cat and... cute. Which really isn't much at all. But there's a lot of potential to be had there. Even if you don't go the route of adding coolness to her traits, or completely making coolness replacing the cuteness, due to her position within the Yakumo family, there's a lot that can be done...

Oh wow, how did it take so long for me to think of this!
