Since I'm lazy and can't be bothered comparing music, overall:
1. MGS 3
2. MGS 4
3. MGS
4. MGS 2
5. MGS: Portable Ops
6: MG
7: MG 2
Note that I haven't played Peace Walker.

Against all tyrants.I'd say, out of those I've played, from worst to best,
- VI - Portable Ops
- V - Peace Walker
- IV - Sons of Liberty
- III - Guns of the Patriots
- II - Twin Snakes
- I - Snake Eater
If only music is taken into consideration, from worst to best it'd be
- VI - Twin Snakes
- V - Portable Ops
- IV - Peace Walker
- III - Sons of Liberty
- II - Snake Eater
- I - Guns of the Patriots

...1. Metal Gear Solid 3
2. Metal Gear Solid 2
3. Metal Gear Solid 1
...gameplay-wise, anyway. Story-wise, I'd put Metal Gear Solid 2 at the bottom. Waaaaay at the bottom.
I draw this comic-like thing sometimes.Clearly you haven't played MGS 4.
Signed. With a huge, huge gap between Snake Eater and Twin snakes.
And MGS 2 is worse story-wise then MGS 4. Ah must defuse mah sins! God almighty.

Of those I've played: III, IV, I, Portable Ops, II.
III has the best story, as I see it, and the second best gameplay. IV has the best gameplay but one of the worst stories. I has the second best story, but the gameplay is meh, II is kind of meh all around, and Portable Ops was a bit too hampered by the PSP control scheme to work.

ALL CREATURE WILL DIE AND ALL THE THINGS WILL BE BROKEN. THAT'S THE LAW OF SAMURAI.What's wrong with Portable Ops?
Frankly, Peace Walker's got a better control scheme and story, though, but its stupid repetitive boring Monster Hunter grinding levels bring it way low. The main story is fun, though.
Half-Life: Dual Nature, a crossover story of reasonably sized proportions.Portable Ops isn't a bad game, but I think Overshadowed by Awesome applies here.
...^^PSP controls.
Too much with to little, and there's the unholy abomination that is the PSP analog nub.
I don't really get why people dislike MGS 2 so much. For me, it's by far the best game, at least in terms of narrative and characterisation. It sure as hell beats out MGS 4's desperate flailing for emotional relevance.
The brilliant thing about MGS 2 is that it's a post-modern criticism of its own medium. So it can get away with its own cheese shamelessly, as it recognises every one of its flaws as it presents them to you. Not to mention that we get some good character development that seems to be pretty much undone by MGS 4, especially in the case of Otacon, who came off as a much stronger character by the time MGS 2 was over.
It also had a plot that basically made some amount of sense, even if it was Moon sense. MGS 4 is plot bullshit from start to finish.
Swordsman Troper — Reclaiming The Blade — WatchExplaining a "we ran out of budget and the team was busy fapping over a mind screw book novel so we just HAD to throw in some stuff from there, oh yeah we're really vague about this whole plot until I have to blatantly tell you in really silly conversations and make the ending as infuriatingly odd as possible and we can play the True Art card if we want" game is bullshit?

Half-Life: Dual Nature, a crossover story of reasonably sized proportions. Was MGS4 as bad as everyoneyou guys say it is? I've heard incredibly conflicting things about this and have so far managed to avoid terrible spoilers so I know nothing about it.
On topic: Out of the ones I've played I'd order them as:
- Metal Gear Solid 3
- Metal Gear Solid 2
- Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes
- Metal Gear Solid
And really, Twin Snakes and 2 are interchangeable I suppose.
dysfunctional human artistry^ No. It's lacking the depth and humor of MGS 3, especially since their main gimmick - an active battlefield that forced the player to keep moving stealthily - got removed halfway through. Still pretty good.
Half-Life: Dual Nature, a crossover story of reasonably sized proportions.MGS 4's gameplay is phenomenal — it's just a shame that the storytelling and characterisation is abysmal.
In MGS 2's defense, I thought its plot was nice and simple, and that it's "mind-screw" elements were pretty blatant in their purpose. After all, it was basically "let's recreate Solid Snake and use New Snake's involvement to take over the world".
Swordsman Troper — Reclaiming The Blade — WatchThe most negative thing that I can say about MGS3 is that pausing every couple of seconds/minutes to change camo can be so tedious. Especially once you have collected most of them. That and most of the Cobra Unit feels like they were thrown in at random without any explanation.
Though the boss fight with The End is my third favorite boss fight in the games.

dysfunctional human artistryMGS 4 fixes that really nicely.
Swordsman Troper — Reclaiming The Blade — WatchI liked the plots of the entire series on a roughly similar level, every game seemed to be a different but equally important facet of Metal Gear as a whole. Some elements could have done with improvement, and the author filibusters sometimes got a little out of hand, but in the end every game delivered on the core aspects of a Metal Gear game - tragedy, homoeroticism, awesome bosses and incredibly long cutscenes.
Also, as far as MGS 4 is concerned, Shadow Moses was...wow. Most of that chapter was a highlight of the entire series. The other part of the chapter...well, let's not talk about Naomi's magical cancer.
...The thing that hit me most about MGS 4 is the narm of what was supposed to be tragic. It all came across as something a teenager imitating anime would try to write.
Swordsman Troper — Reclaiming The Blade — Watch^ The only thing that irked me was the whole Otacon/Naomi relationship. It could have been written a lot better, especially the death scene. The flailing of the Mark III could have been used to represent Otacon's inability to do anything if he had so much as banged his fists on the keyboard. Instead, he just sits there ramrod stiff, and does nothing. Not to mention Otacon cares more about a message from Naomi than about Snake almost dying.
Against all tyrants.
Just a little question.
Of the MG/MGS games you have played, how would you order them from best overall to worst?
This is based on story, gameplay, music, etc..
