As for Mari acting like the Kaworu figure to Asuka, what if she turns out to be an Angel? It would be a lot more gut-wrenching for our redhead if she has to go through what Shinji went through in the original series.

Yeah, especially since Kaworu's role will be markedly different here.

I can't see Asuka opening her heart to someone new the same way Shinji did, unless she really mistrusts everyone, and beyond maybe Gendo I can't see Asuka feeling that way. I'd predict her being angry at Mari, though more like she is with Shinji than with Rei.

I mean you know she's really just as fragile as Shinji on the inside; she just never encountered anyone who wanted to get under her skin... except for the Mind Rape Angel of course.

I dunno...that seems a little lazy to me. I mean, having a third character who's secretly an angel who plays the same role as one of the previous angels in the original series is a little uninspired. Plus Mari just doesn't strike me as an angel. She's a little gunghoe but that could be explained as being American or something. I'm all for her and Asuka getting close and somehow betraying her, but I hope it's done a little more creatively.

It explains how she can pilot Unit-02 if we're still going by the whole "EV As need the soul of your mother to operate" deal.

Specifically, I think that Mari might be a clone of Kyoko, if she is not an actual Angel as someone has suggested.

Well, in the new continuity we don't know if that rule is still in effect. It's possible the EV As are, to a degree, sentient and can choose their own pilots, to a fault. At the time Asuka was completely incapacitated and wasn't gonna come out of it any time soon. So if Unit-02 wanted it's pilot to live, Mari would have to substitute. Plus she seems to understand the EV As pretty well so that could have something to do with it. or maybe she was genetically engineered to have a perfect sync rate.

Can you imagine if "Cruel Angel's Thesis" were used as a Theme Music Power-Up in the last Angel fight of Rebuild?

I think it would be cool actually. Cruel Angel Thesis for some reason isn't really used for those types of scenes in the games (I was kind of bummed out that it didn't play when Shinji marched into Central Dogma in SRW Alpha 3).

I need to ask, has anyone found a clearer image of the character silhouettes showed for the new movie? It looks like most of them will be new additions, and I spotted some that are about the same height as the other kids.

Thanks, looking at it now it does look like we're going to get at least one new addition to the Children after Mari (going from the right, it's Mari, Asuka, Rei, Shinji, and Kaworu, then the unknown silhouette) for 3.0. Since the movie is sort of going to be new territory for the series, it might be too much to expect deep characterization, but at least give the kid more than five minutes before he or she (likely the latter) gets eaten by the Mass Production types or something.

It's not concept artwork, it's from an official Evangelion store in Japan.

Stores based on franchises are amazing. O_O Pokemon Centers, Nintendo stores, I think there are some for Hello Kitty...

That's also implying the harpies will appear in NME.

It's not a familiar silhouette though, and in associated EVA media I don't think there's any old character who's about the size of 15-year old, wears a beret and what looks like a scarf around their neck, and unless they went and repurposed Mana Kirishima it couldn't be, say, Hikari, the other visible female character the Children's age.

At least I hope we don't get the M Ps. We might be getting something else.

Anyway, as mentioned the new movie is relatively new territory for everyone, new characters and all, with some familiar scenes (Kaworu going into Terminal Dogma) thrown in. Will just have to wait and see for this one.
