Isolates are an interesting and mysterious phenomenon. There are many in Papua New Guinea, as well.

There obviously is a history to those languages, and probably extinct predecessors that might link them to the most ancient shared languages at the root of other language families, but there's basically no way of ever finding out.

Oh yeah. Comic for today. I'm not sure why a blue whale is higher on the luminosity scale than a human would be. Is it simply because it's bigger, so it reflects more light? If you set it on fire the fire would be bigger?

Yes, it's because it's larger. Size makes a big difference in apparent luminosity. This one is cute.

You see this in China, too. As Chinese culture expands southwards, it erased many older languages, which results in a lot of apparently orphaned modern languages. There must obviously have been a linguistic history there, but it has been completely erased by another dominant language which is not related to it.

#2010: Update Notes

I wonder if someone's actually doing this, although it wouldn't work on the Apple App Store, since all updates have to be approved.

I'm reminded of a certain Neon Genesis Evangelion fanfic where Ritsuko and Maya covertly made plans on how to subvert Gendo's plans and flirted via the comments inside the MAGI's OS's code.

Simply making fun little comments in code? No, not really.

Plotting against your boss and making inappropriate comments in code? Maaaaaybe.

Our company hired a new Team Lead, and he brought with himself to the project an old friend of his as an outsourcer. We've noticed that the latter made a comment in the code, complaining about the architectural choice in a very inappropriate manner. When we've drawn the Team Lead's attention to the comment he basically said that "While I do agree with the point of the message, its phrasing is unacceptable. Don't comment your code like that in the future." — the latter was aimed at us.

I'm think I get the joke, but it's pretty "meh". I guess Randall just had an off-day.

[up]About half, if not more, of the comics is meh. There are some exceptionally good ones, and the others which can induce a good discussion on the forum, but nothing more.

With how climate change has been going, I could see the planet becoming uninhabitable in a few centuries, so either we get our shit together to fix it, get our shit together and get out into space, or humanity dies in a frying pan of its own making.

[up]Is that sarcasm or some reference I'm not getting? If so, my apologies. Otherwise, you do realize that average global temperature is still going up every year, sea levels are still rising, and that while the hole in the ozone layer has shrunk, the overall ozone layer is still being gradually depleted?

Indeed, and the hole is still there, though not as severe as it once was. The ozone level goes up and down somewhat, too.

Randall made this frighteningly efficient comic about global warming by the way. I have not checked the figures, but if they are accurate this is one of the most striking demonstration of the subject I have ever seen.

[up]Which I'm sure will be a comfort to the roaches. A rise in temperature that drastic would kill off species by the hundreds. Sure, humans would be able to survive, but the biosphere would be wrecked beyond repair, and a lot of crops would also die, unless we manage to make some heat-resistant breeds. Rising sea levels would eliminate a lot of coastal and low-lying areas, which, since a lot of people tend to live by coastlines, would mean mass displacement of populations, and less land means less room to grow what food can still be grown. It may not be an extinction-level issue in 10, 20, or even 100 years, but it definitely will be unless something is done to curb it.
