No 40K thread yet? I'm surprised. Nay, shocked, shocked I say to discover there's gambling going on in this establishment...

I'm eagerly anticipating the imminent 5th Edition release, personally, but I was interested to know if anyone here plays and has a differing opinion on it. There are certainly plenty of people out there who seem to think that 40K 4th edition "only just" came out and that a new edition isn't needed. Anyone?

Warhammer Fantasy (including Age of Sigmar and WFRP) has its own thread here.

it's looking more and more like GW doesn't even care about even pretending to hide its desire to make you buy the most expensive models to be effective in a game :/

I might have to take up Iron kingdoms or something, because my wallet is an immortal, and as far as wargames go, there can be only one.

Yeah, I was aware of A-D-B not going ahead with his Grey Knight plans (I'm a B&Cer).

[up]Not that I've found, but 6th hits in two days! That's hardly anything to wait.

I hear ADB is really good. Does anyone know if The Emperor's Gift is a good book?

I read a chapter of Helsreach, and I definitely want more (I don't say that of 40k novels very often, and I stick to the short stories in the compendiums).

It does seem that his writing is widely-praised though (but again, just an impression, nothing statistically correct about my sample size).

That's nothing new. Logan Grimnar, Space Wolves Chapter Master in the 41st Millennium, acquired a Daemon weapon from a vanquished foe, successfully No Selled the weapons' attempts to corrupt him, and then had his Chapter's Iron Fathers reforge the weapon to make sure that other Space Wolves don't get accidentally corrupted by prolonged proximity to it.

Don't forget the scene where Space Wolf primarch challenged the Emperor to a drinking competition, and won.

idea Grey Knights are not incorruptible. Well, assuredly, their particular brand of mental training makes them more proof against corruption then the average space marine by several magnitudes and degrees, that is not the only nor even primary means by which corruption is prevented. No, the real power lies in the micro-script prayers and incantations carved into the Gray Knights' black carapace that uses secrets taken from Magnus the Red, but told to instead came from the Emperor.

Every single Space Marine will likely feel the touch and temptation of Chaos in their lifetime. It is a true test of their character to reject that temptation or sadly give in to it. No such chance is given to the Grey Knight however. If the touch of Chaos should ever over come their wards and pierce the super fortress the 666 tests built in their mind then the contingency plan set into their implants will activate and immediately eliminate the Grey Knight. This happens rarely but it does happen.

Most that do simply immolate inside their armor. However, their are particular deaths unique to every Chaos God if it is their particular touch that corrupts the Grey Knight. For Slaanesh and Tzeentch, the process attacks their brain, leaving the body intact. It's more than a brain dead coma, akin to decapitation as even the lower functions of the brain that keep the body going are shut down, achieving total death. For Slaaneshi corruption, the sensory portions of the brain are shut down first before moving to lower brain function, all the senses, leaving the Grey Knight in painless sensory deprived darkness before they die. For Tzeentchian, the higher cognitive functions are shut down first, leaving the marine in a completely brain dead coma before they actually die.

For Khorne and Nurgle, the body is attacked. Khornate corruption sends the marine into a violent seizure as their insides rupture apart. Their orifices seal and blood vessels contract, preventing blood from being spilled as they are torn apart from the inside. The whole process is extremely painful. For Nurglesque corruption, the Grey Knight experience complete and utter bliss as their body melts into a sterile uniform goo. There other odd reactions that happen. While exterminating a chaos cult that used a bisected black-and-white skull as their symbol, one Grey Knight turned his gun upon himself and simply blew his brains out.

re ADB: One of the better new crop of Black Library authors for sure, and what's more readily accessible. As I mentioned, he's a regular poster at the Bolter and Chainsword, and is an inhabitant of the Chaos subforums there (he's a — obviously — Night Lords and Iron Warriors player).

Whenever something about the story side of things pops up, he's sure to throw in his thoughts as well as some of GW's stand on things (we had a LONG thread on the nebulous nature of canon in 40k, for example). He also regularly picks the brains of the posters there for ideas — for example, for the last novel of his Night Lords trilogy he dropped by the Ultramatines subforum to make sure that he got the details of the Primogenitors right.

re: Emperor's Gift - It's basically a look at the First War of Armageddon through the eyes of a Grey Knight Strike marine, and the fallout that comes after. There are several memorable scenes in it, but the one that comes to mind is where Logan Grimnar teleports onboard the strike cruiser with his entourage of Wolf Guard, where the inquisitor pushing the issue and his allied Grey Knights were waiting, and Grimnar nonchalantly decapitates the GK Grand Master before anyone blinks.

So... I just had a thought.

Tau can ally with Space Marines, and presumably due to being Brothers in Arms, ride their transports.

XV Battlesuits can't ride the Tau Devilfish transport. However, this is only because the Devilfish specifically states it cannot hold any units in XV Battlesuits; the Battlesuits themselves do not have rules disallowing them from entereing Transports.

The Space Marine Rhino has two firing points, and has no such rule disallowing troops in XV Battlesuits.

You can buy a XV 88 broadside team with two members.

I think you can see where I'm going with this.

Hopefully the rules will have more classifications for infantry to head that off. Terminators and Broadsides will probably be put in a box that ensures that you can't put them in a metal bawks easily.

So they can go in... Stormeagles.

Agreed. Space Wolves are awesome. In fact, they're so awesome that Magnus the Red himself had to concoct an elaborate scheme to destroy their only chance to fix the gene-seed flaw that's preventing them from having viable Successor Chapters (which they planned to use to surround the Eye of Terror from all sides).

@GoA: That was made of pure [awesome].

I personally like warhammer 40k, its just the fact that nearest Gw place is like and hour away and the hobby is quite expensive to say the least, so i just read about it everywhere i can. I want to get the games which are off 75% so bad, the sad part is that if i had 2 more dollars in my steam wallet, i would be able to buy one of the games, which is a shame imo.

Someone on the B&C has a rulebook and was taking questions last night.

I think the biggest thing I took away from that was Terminators are awesome again.

And allies can't jump into each other's transports.

[up]If you're willing to spend a bit of time looking around ebay or your FLGS (if there is one), you can probably pick up a second-hand army for a reasonable price. I can certainly attest to army turnover being quite rapid in my area. Stripping the paint and whatnot from those second-hand models will be time-consuming, but that just strengthens the bond you'll invariably have with your little plastic men (and/or women).

I certainly will be. Especially with Dark Angels having access to the Stormeagle by way of Forgeworld. And with the high likelihood of Dark Angels being the next Codex. And with my twenty-something Terminator models not having seen any use since 4th.

6th also hits storm shields pretty hard in a number of situations. Overall I'm looking forward to getting some time in under the new ruleset, but I'll be running fewer soft vehicles (Speeders, Rhinos).

I feel that (and keep in mind that I do not play them and that practically no one has got any time in with them) Tyranids have been hit reasonably hard this edition.

A friend of mine actually said Tyranids got a whole lot better with the new flyer rules and such, plus the added survivability from power weapons being lower AP.

I wonder if this means Commander Dante will be S5 base now, since he's got the Axe Mortalis.

...Because that means when he charges with a Sanguinary Priest he'll be a S6, re-roll one hit one-man killing machine with 6 attacks on the charge.

And that will be good.

I1 though. Axes are mostly there for line troops to take on Terminators. Bit of a waste of his I5 (or is he I6?).

EDIT: Your friend might be right! I found the Challenge rules, Overwatch, and grenades vs. MC rules to be sort of harsh against 'Nids, plus M Cs having to halve their attacks to Smash. Still, Hive Guard are (more) awesome, 'Stealer rending might still be AP 2. And the changes to disembarking actually make 'Nid assault units (comparatively) amazingly fast.
