Fair enough. I don't like the real guys either and the fictional ones can be annoying to read for me as well. However, like Thaumaturgis, I am enjoying Larry Character Development myself. Maybe the point of this whole thing was the introduce Larry as a new regular character. His purpose was the show social justice from the POV of some clueless guy who have said terrible things but is willing to learn. Shive himself give this vibe on his tumblr, so I figure this is a way for him to express his own learnings and doubts in comic.

Probably the best character to have done that with would be Tedd, who used to do basically everything Larry does and more, but it works okay with Larry, and I kind of like how he didn't learn a lesson immediately from his experience with Sarah- it's only after the fact that he re-evaluates his behaviour.

Well, we'll see. Sometimes characters introduced in a cringe-worthy way can end up developing to tolerable or even pretty damned likable characters. I still can't stand either Larry or Rich, but hey, maybe that'll change, maybe it won't.

What an unexpected twist on the their roleplay- Was Wizard Susan always that busty?

The clothing conversation was so uninteresting hat if the NP had a punchline I couldn't see it.

Yay,back to stuff I find more interesting! Card games and silliness is my jam. And yes, Wizard Sarah is packing more than vanilla Sarah. And the NP just extends the closet pervert thing.

I think Sarah has been depicted with A-Cup Angst in the past. It'd make sense for her imaginary avatar to have a larger bust than her.

I think Sexy Vampire Susan also had a larger bust than her.

Yes I know about the A-Cup Angst and I remember very specifically that slinky vampire Sarah was bustier than regular Sarah because that was sort of the point of the "sexier Sarah", but I didn't even notice that she had done this to her wizard form.

The Rant hit home, I thought "Oh, a jedi! No wait, that's an angel" when I first saw it.

I'm inclined to call today's NP another example of Shive's Catholic Guilt at work. Especially the first panel. Oh no! Nanase's LEGS are visible! Avert your eyes! Do everything in your power to end this shameful, SHAMEFUL, arousing SHAMEFUL situation!

What Nanase is wearing right now is the equivalent of a skirt. Much like the characters were horrifically overreacting to the prospect that Tedd and Sarah have been naked in the general vicinity of each other, they are now horrifically overreacting to an article of clothing that women wear on a regular basis.

Everybody present in this room needs to grow the f*ck up.

Personally, I assumed it had more to do with underwear suddenly going loose like something from Art Frahm's work. And yes, going commando is a mildly taboo thing in American society.

Shive's actual religious denominations are unknown, but he behaves in a manner similar to Catholic Guilt - your desires are sinful and you should FEEL SHAME for your wicked, lustful ways - which is why I use that term.

He has a tendency in his comic to do strips that go, "Mmmm, boobies," then follow them up with, "No! Boobies are wrong! I repent my wicked, wicked ways!"

Maybe it's because I've been psychologically conditioned to be major prude but I can't really fault his guilty conscious.

Right now, the main thing I'm looking at would be Tedd's "ugly cousin" thing about Nanase, which is so overblown as to wind up looking like Tedd's overcompensating for guilty, lustful feelings towards his cousin.

It's okay to acknowledge that a relative is an attractive human being. That is not incestuous. When you freak out like Tedd just did over the presence of bare legs, constantly make disparaging comments about her appearance in stark contradiction of your behavior towards every single other female you ever meet, etc. it all winds up sounding like a Suspiciously Specific Denial.

Nobody would assume in the first place that Tedd has any sort of desires towards Nanase, but Shive is so determined to prove to no one but himself that Tedd would NEVER, in a MILLION YEARS, even CONSIDER having incestuous sex with her that it actually hurts Tedd's character in the process.

But that's just one example of Shive's unhealthy fixation on denying his healthy fixation with sex and sexuality. End result, for this scene, is that Tedd is freaking out for no good reason at the existence of bare legs in the same room as he's in, and Tedd's not a prude, so the only reason he'd be making such a big deal out of this is if those legs are uncomfortably enticing - which is absolutely NOT the intent of this scene at all.

That's actually an extremely excellent point and... Actually says a lot more about Tedd than I needed to know considering what's already being said about him...

Oh god, in overemphasizing it he's made Tedd out to look like a guy that would totally want to have sex with Nanase.

Human interactions are so weird. You can't reinforce your point without looking like overcompensating

That's... exactly what I thought was going on all along. It never occurred to me that there was any other way to read Tedd's reactions to his cousin.

Tedd's reaction at the end of Grace's Birthday ("Ugly cousin! UGLY COUSIN!!") is super-weird, and I do think it's because of attraction. But at the same time, I don't think it's weird to not want to see your relatives naked like in today's NP, and as such I don't think the first panel is going too far to the point of earlier Tedd moments with Nanase. He just doesn't want to see someone naked.

Like seeing friends you have naked, friends who you don't want to be weird with - that's one weird thing. Seeing your blood-related cousin naked is another. All things considered, that one panel really isn't that bad - he's been much more vocal about that in the past, he's not wigging out and making it obvious that on some level he finds a relative of his attractive, he's closing his eyes and explaining stuff that will keep someone's clothes on so he doesn't have to see them naked.

Extended isolation does weird things to people - Tedd's somewhat attracted to his cousin, as made obvious by a few choice moments in the comic's run. But I don't think this NP comic is one of those choice moments.

I always found that "ugly cousin" stuff creepy, especially when her first saw her with Ellen. It seemed as if he was trying to use ugliness as an excuse not to find those particular lesbians hot. But I thought today NP was about him being afraid of what would happen when Nanase's shirt went back to normal size and she was in her underwear. Unless those slipped off too, which would make it worse.
