I have a suspicion that if any ordinary sea catastrophe would happen, Lindsey would be able to simply carry off all the kids back to the shore.

I don't think it's exactly that she has too much power but rather that the nature of her power is beyond human understanding and control, so having so much power just means it's a potential disaster when her control does slip. Being with Smitty rather than Gamma would just make her unable to control her powers more frequently. Sure, he might make the brain spiders march in step or something, but that's not really very helpful, is it?
