i mean we all frequent tvtropes. i'm sure that 99% of the time, by about the 1/3 mark of any given story, all of us know exactly how that story is going to end and how it's going to get there

Heck, I remember seeing a comment that shipping wars in Shonen manga are so common because we already know how everything in the main plot's going to go, so the resolution to the romance is one of the few things up in the air (in some cases, in others it's just as obvious as the hero beating the villain).

So...any speculations about how Tony is going to react to this? I'm kind of hoping he goes into "Tony-bot" mode in the next strip, just for the hilarity that would ensue.

A crazy thought since the subject of the Court's motives for this came up...
What is Surma doing for the Forest at the moment? Is it something particularly valuable to them?
Is it possible that they're trying to Death by Childbirth Surma? That they're aware of how fire elementals work, she doesn't seem to get it herself, and that they want her out of the picture by more subtle if extremely slow means? Maybe Coyote would be suspicious if Surma developed some manner of terminal disease that eventually kills her, but they certainly can't be held accountable for her falling in love and getting pregnant, that would be a ridiculous and insane method to kill someone...someone who could actually be killed having a child.

I think that Tony is the sort of person you basically have to hit over the head with a big sign saying "I like you, you dummy!" But how does he deal with intimacy, especially unexpected? I think it is a toss up between going with it and breaking things up.
And yeah, what about James? I am pretty sure they are still dating.

It also makes sense. I always figured Tony had some sort of ambiguous disorder, something that just makes him click off into stoic Tony to process being around other people.

Could be a lot of things. Given how he opens up when he's on his own, I'm guessing really intense anxiety. Which could have a lot of sources, but seems like it's probably going to have its roots in some childhood trauma and some distance between him and his parents, just given how similar he and Annie are in other ways. It's impressive just how cyclical these things really are.
We have seen him many times alone together with his daughter, and he has difficulty being himself around her as well.
I guess it's a combination of both his extreme anxiety and also his lingering guilt about Surma.
That's a pretty bad combination of issues to have when trying to raise a child.

Yeah, it's not like you're only allowed to have one trigger for your anxiety. He freezes up around Annie, but it's not exactly the same as what we saw at the beginning of this chapter. He seems a lot more tense around her.
Plus he's never really going to be alone with Annie. Surma's always going to be there with them. In more than one sense.
