YMMV / Zuko's Story

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: How similar/different is Azula's relationship with Zuko here as opposed to the series? Zuko acknowleging that Ozai clearly favorites her over him indicates that he's so put upon that while Azula can't help but boost herself by gloating to him in one scene—which may have just been postering to act like she was taking it better than she was, she's willing to grant him a big Pet the Dog by means of convincing Ozai to give him a ship and crew—and thus, actually legit pities him too and would be partially if not completely putting on an act just to stay in Ozai's good graces since she possibly knows full-well he could just as easily turn on her too for not being idealic and unquestioning—and thus her sympathizing with Zuko more. Even if she doesn't think Zuko will succeed in capturing Aang—and that her gleefully accepting the job at the end of the film is another way she can make a huge power move, seems she'll still grant his expedition to search for him enough legs to not be a total fool's endeavor though—and could be using it as a means to either toughen Zuko up, better protect him from Ozai's toxicity as she herself's way more in line with what he wants from his children—and knows better how to play the game as presented by when she's stoic as Zuko's thrown out of the palace—or have him be loyal to her in the future when she herself wants to make a bid as the next heir in line so that she'll in-turn redeem him in the Fire Nation's eyes too.
  • Complete Monster: Fire Lord Ozai leads the Fire Nation in endless conquest and war. A brutal tyrant who stifles all dissent, Ozai causes countless deaths in his attempts of conquest, and even sacrifices his own troops without any hint of regret to achieve victory. A horribly abusive father who brutalized, scarred, and exiled his son Zuko for speaking out against such an action, Ozai intends to mold Zuko into a heartless killer like Ozai's other child, Azula.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: This comic is actually regarded as a pretty decent read. Part of this is because its writers went out of their way to include references to the animated series. Another is that it also gives a lot of credence to What Could Have Been too.
