YMMV / Yomawari: Midnight Shadows

Go To

  • Captain Obvious Reveal: The fact that Yui was Dead All Along isn't really a surprise given how the opening of the game shows her killing herself.
  • Even Better Sequel: Compared to Night Alone, Midnight Shadows has a better story, various gameplay improvements, better graphics and sound, freakier enemies, and is a lot scarier.
  • Nightmare Fuel: As with the prequel, Midnight Shadows plays up the Primal Fear of the dark and unforgiving night full of horrors, stranding you in the deserted streets of a city asleep with nothing but youkai wandering the streets.
  • Paranoia Fuel: Thanks to the many scares of the first game, returning players are much more on edge than newcomers. Most of those who played the first game shuddered the moment they saw a pebble in the tutorial. This becomes doubly so once the tutorial is repeated again during the final chapter.
  • Signature Scene: As with the first game, the tutorial is one of the most memorable moments in the game, but with a twist. It's the repeated tutorial at the end of the game that has people talking as it reveals that the voice behind the tutorial was the Big Bad the entire time, and that it was using it to have the players kill off Yui and Haru. It is also memorable for the incredible Scenery Porn of the mountains set against the setting sun, which is further enhanced by the use of Motion Parallax to give the mountains depth.
  • Tear Jerker: The moment Haru finds out the reason behind Yui's disappearance. She committed suicide after losing her dog and father, and is distraught that Haru is moving away. Upon reaching the final chapter, the player is shown Haru's diary which has her entry made illegible by all the hastily scribbled "No"s all over the page with the exception of one single sentence — "It's All My Fault".
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: Yui's trek through the mountains in the tutorial. While its clear from the beginning that Midnight Shadows is visually better than its predecessor, the mountain scene's use of Motion Parallax to add depth to the mountains had many players drop their jaw.
  • The Woobie: Both Yui and Haru.
    • Yui was Driven to Suicide after one of her dogs die and her best friend Haru moving away, all against them being her only joys in life after her gambling addict father died, making her mother become more neglectful and abusive. The Red String of Fate sealed by Haru during the festival when she promised to never leave keeps Yui from moving on as a spirit and starts making her an evil spirit. Oh yeah, she's ten years old.
    • Haru is a Shrinking Violet forced to search her town at night filled with roaming spirits that will kill her on contact in search of Yui, not knowing she was dead before the fireworks. The payoff? She learns her best friend Yui committed suicide and feels responsible, never gets to reunite with Yui because her spirit would turn completely evil if Haru kept holding on, and her left arm has been severed. Oh yeah, she's also ten years old.
    • Both of the girls' stories are rife with trauma and end with it being All for Nothing.
