YMMV / Who's Harry Crumb?

Go To

  • Critical Dissonance: Critics felt it was mediocre at best. Fans of the late John Candy still flock to this movie.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Probably the apex of this is the footsies scene.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Nikki is Amanda Young, one of the apprentices to the Jigsaw Killer.
  • So Okay, It's Average: Overall, it's a rather middling 80's goofball comedy that likely would have been all-but-forgotten had a lesser comedian played the oafish title character, but John Candy's lovable charm and charisma are plenty enough to redeem the movie.
  • Spiritual Successor: To the Pink Panther movies; both are about a bumbling accident-prone detective who is assigned a case which he solves by using various disguises to get information from different people while slowly driving his boss crazy.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: A minor example, but Elliot being the true mastermind of Jennifer's kidnapping and assigning an obvious dope like Harry to the case as a Springtime for Hitler ploy would have made for a really good plot twist, had the movie held off on it for a bit rather than establishing both in his very first scene.
  • Values Dissonance: The scene where Harry dons a turban, fake beard, and Indian accent, and infiltrates a hotel under the guise of a Sikh air conditioning repairman, only be reffered to as "Tonto" by a bigoted guest. Maybe this was an acceptable level of crass in The '80s, but it definitely wouldn't fly in today's more racially sensitive culture.
