• Awesome Music: The whole beautiful and emotional synth soundtrack by by Para One, but particularly "Finale", which is both heartwarming and tear-jerking and plays when Marie and Anne reconcile and float in the pool while Floriane is left alone at the party.
• Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The scene in which Anne buries her bra in the garden.
• Crowning Moment of Awesome: Anne's rejection of François.
• Narm: There is a scene where the synchronised swimming coach inspects the female swimmers' armpits and berates one girl for forgetting to shave. It's clearly intended to shine a spotlight on the pressures of being a teenage girl, but comes off as unintentionally funny.
  Swimmer: I didn't have time.
  Coach: Is that what you'll tell your husband? "I didn't have time"?
• Harsher in Hindsight: The scene in which Floriane confides in Marie with stories of sexual harassment from older men. 12 years after the film's release, Floriane's actress Adèle Haenel publicly accused director Christophe Ruggia of sexually harassing her when she was 12-15 years old, and he was eventually charged following an investigation. Water Lilies was her first film after an acting hiatus she took following the experience, meaning that she had experienced harassment similar to her character at the time of filming.
• Unintentional Period Piece: The film was released in 2007. The main characters' outfits just scream 2000s.
