YMMV / Wacky Races (2017)

Go To

  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: "Far and Away in Old Bombay" has a big musical number near the end of the race. While downplayed, as it is actually discussed shortly before and again almost immediately afterward, this is never brought up again.
  • Broken Base:
    • The show's lesser emphasis on racing and heavier focus on comedy are either done poorly, or are just fine.
    • The question of whether this is just another experiment that should be taken for itself or the start of the new status quo for Hanna-Barbera TV revivals. note
    • The prominent fourth wall breaking humor is either hilarious or annoying and pretentious.
  • Genius Bonus: Bella's name seems to be a dual reference to Bella Swan and the usual North American mispronunciation of Bela (Bey-la) Lugosi.
  • Ho Yay: In "Race to Infinity," Peter disguises himself in drag, and Dastardly falls in love with him, and continues to flirt with him even when he finds out the truth.
  • Replacement Scrappy: Some fans view I.Q. Ickly as a poor replacement for the original series' Professor Pat Pending.
  • Take That, Scrappy!:
    • The Trope Namer's picture is seen in "Uncle Dickie's Happy Sunshine Children's Hour" on a bulletin board labeled "Bad Cartoon Characters". Subverted in that Scrappy bites back by swapping his spot with Dick. The ensuing chaos that results from the main characters trying to get back in the networks' good graces could well explain his motive.
    • Any time something bad happens to I.Q. could be this for anyone who doesn't like him. Acknowledged in-universe in "What A Wacky Development This Is" with I.Q.'s name in the sitcom parody.
    • Subverted again: In "Double Trouble", Dick Dastardly's Cute But Psycho fan fires the Trope Namer out of a cannon in order to attack her opponent. He is implied to have promptly died shortly afterward, and some applause can be heard off-screen...only we find out a few seconds later that Scrappy survived, which the audience would have seen. They were congratulating Scrappy for being Made of Iron.
  • Older Than They Think: The show moving less from racing and more on subplots unrelated to racing may seem off, but this is actually a more faithful version of The Great Race than in the original series. In The Great Race, the main characters at one point stop the race to watch an old west show and get into a bar fight, get stranded on an iceberg for a few days, and get roped into a big conspiracy involving the villain getting involved in a silly Prince and Pauper plot. These are all things that places the race itself as more of a side story, much like in this show.
  • Tear Jerker: Penelope's reaction to seeing her friends being erased by The Editor in "Wackier than Fiction", special note going to her distraught exclamation upon seeing I.Q. disappear, who is only a child. The episode even manages to make you feel bad for Dick Dastardly who sacrifices himself in order to get Penelope across, with him admitting that he's not nearly heroic enough to save the others himself. It's enough to put poor Penelope through a lot...
  • Unexpected Character: With all the Hanna-Barbera cameos throughout the series, it's doubtful anyone expected a cameo of The Chief from Super Secret Secret Squirrel.
