YMMV / Virtual Hydlide

Go To

  • Narm: The vampire's bizarre slowed down backwards Japanese is clearly supposed to be creepy, and maybe it worked domestically. Unfortunately, English speakers just end up hearing it as something along the lines of "Yes, that's enigmatic. Are you he? You're a pimp!", which maybe could have worked as Word-Salad Horror if it didn't sound absolutely ridiculous.
  • Sequelitis: About the kindest thing that you can say about Virtual Hydlide is that it had some neat concepts — including a randomly-generated open world — that came a console generation or two too early to really do them justice. Other than that, it suffers from ugly, photographic cut-out graphics that are rendered at an abysmal frame-rate even by Sega Saturn standards, unresponsive controls, Loads and Loads of Loading, and poor quest and dungeon design.
  • So Bad, It's Good: Between its atrocious framerate, awkward controls, ugly and mismatched visuals, kitschy FMV cutscenes, janky combat, player-unfriendly mechanics such as cursed items and requiring certain weapons/items to clear parts of the game without being instructed to obtain them, among other things, it's certainly a game you can have fun with how bad it is.
