YMMV / Victor Frankenstein

Go To

  • Actor Shipping: The SDCC panel was full of dirty jokes between James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe. McAvoy infamously pinned Radcliffe against the wall after the host requested that they re-enact a homoerotic scene from the movie. The latter at one point declared, "And a thousand slash fics were born!"
    • The actors' ship name is Radavoy, and this is confirmed by James (with Daniel's approval) in this interview. They both demand that shippers write more erotic fanfics about them.
    • Daniel has something of a man crush on his co-star because he reveals in this ''Total Film'' article that he likes being beaten by McAvoy:
Radcliffe: I've enjoyed all aspects of working with [James], but the physical side is one that really sets him apart from a lot of people. He has thrown me around in this film. Pretty much our first day was him repeatedly slamming me against a pillar, so that set the tone. I like to think that I've been the most willing victim he's ever had as an onscreen partner.
  • Awesome Music: For those who enjoyed the cover/remix of The Doors' Break on Through (to the Other Side) which was used in the UK trailer, it's from Josh Mobley Music, in case you were curious.
  • Estrogen Brigade: Daniel Radcliffe, James McAvoy, Andrew Scott and Freddie Fox provide plenty of eye candy for fangirls who enjoy seeing good-looking actors in period costumes.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Despite the fact that Igor ends up with Lorelei, far more fans ship him with Victor. This is due to feeling that he has far more chemistry with Victor and their Ho Yay filled friendship being the main focus. Add the fact that Daniel Radcliffe plays Igor and James McAvoy plays Victor, plus both actors knowingly encourage shippers in interviews, and it's little wonder that fans on Tumblr or who write fanfiction latched onto the pairing.
  • Ho Yay:
    • Without proper context, you would be forgiven for mistaking Victor's attempt to correct Igor's physical deformity as an aggressive (and possibly non-consensual on Igor's part, since he doesn't understand at first what Victor is trying to do) session of dry-humping. Victor even rips Igor's shirt off. This reviewer goes so far as to describe the scene as "...he straightens him out by the well-known method of slamming him hard against a pillar with his own body, which looks a good deal like a vigorous sexual assault."
    • James McAvoy made fun of the pus (which happens to be milky-white in colour) removal on ''The Graham Norton Show'' with loads of Double Entendres. It turned out that it was the actor's idea to make this scene more gross/homoerotic than what was in the script.
Norton: It turns out it's disgusting, but quite simple.
McAvoy: Yeah, you suck it out.
Radcliffe: My favourite scene in the film!
McAvoy: You don't swallow, you don't swallow.
Norton: You must swallow a bit.
McAvoy: Well, only to make him feel nice. Make him feel like I care.
      Norton: What a good doctor!
McAvoy: I know, I must go back to him. We had this thing where it was meant to be syringed out, like a big old medical syringe, and you pull it out. The minute I read it, I thought, I'd love to sort of do that, but also I had this image of siphoning, when you siphon petrol out of somebody's car. [...] I thought we should suck it, and get the pus flowing, as it were. [...] And of course, you're going to get a little bit of blow back in your mouth, and then you get it out, and it starts the flow, and that drains the sac.
Radcliffe: It was this great moment not in the script, James is coming up with it on set, and we were working out the logistics of it. We were like, "This is great." Me, James and Paul were getting really excited like three kids about this hilarious, gross, brilliant idea we had. Then I just remember walking on set and seeing a couple of the producers clearly thinking, "What? We need to separate them."
McAvoy: This is our first day together, by the way.
Radcliffe: This is James' first day on set as well, it was great.
    • Victor does seem awfully jealous of Lorelei, and in the movie, there is no indication that Victor is attracted to women. This adds subtext to his extolling the virtues of artificial insemination.
    • There were a few movie critics who have noted that Finnegan would stand very close to Victor to whisper in an almost seductive manner in his ear. When the former says, "I like this ambition," Finnegan appears to be reaching out to touch Victor, but then he suddenly pulls back his arm, as if realizing at that moment that Victor wouldn't welcome the physical contact. While this is probably unintentional by the filmmakers, it nevertheless suggests that there may be some attraction on Finnegan's part. It also doesn't help that Finnegan's dandyism gives the character some Sissy Villain vibes, note  plus Freddie Fox had been cast in gay/bisexual roles previously in his career.
  • Nausea Fuel: The pus-draining scene. Good luck watching it without getting at least a little queasy.
  • Portmanteau Couple Name: Tumblr has coined Igorstein for Igor/Victor.
  • Spiritual Successor: Probably a better Re-Animator remake than an adaptation of Mary Shelley's book.
  • Squick: Just about everyone who has seen this movie was utterly disgusted by the pus draining scene.
  • Strangled by the Red String: Virtually every film critic found the romance between Igor and Lorelei to be superfluous and poorly written, a needless distraction from the story's main relationship—the one between Igor and Victor.
  • Strawman Has a Point: Turpin is obsessed with stopping Victor's work, because he feels it violates the natural order of things and is in opposition to God's will. Given what happens to pretty much everybody helping Victor as soon as he brings Prometheus to life in the climax, one thinks Turpin might have been on to something.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Fans of Mary Shelley's novel loathed this adaptation, which had very little to do with the original story. Of course, given that Igor is the main character, this reaction was to be expected.
  • The Woobie: Igor; From being the nameless hunchback who was constantly abused by his fellow circus members, to becoming the assistant of a relatively insane man whose focused on his work more than anything else, it's hard not to feel bad for this guy.
