TV series:

  • Narm:
    • Tsuyoshi and Saori cry so much it quickly becomes this.
    • Narm Charm: Ushijima and Matsunaga getting together with their beloved might come across as very touching, if you can get over how tactless they are (especially Matsunaga!).
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Misuzu, barely. She treats Tsuyoshi so horribly she almost makes Asuka look nice by comparison, but manages to redeem herself by showing her (limited) good will towards him. Then she ruins it by showing she’s just as big of a bitchy Gold Digger as she’s always been when she crudely dumps Kazuya.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Shogo Muto, the head writer of the 2005 TV series, would later go onto writing Crows Zero and Kamen Rider Build.
  • Squick: Matsunaga singing about his love of ankles in the series finale.
  • Values Dissonance:
    • Tsuyoshi and his colleagues are apparently very calm about talking on the phone in the restroom; the only thing that seems to irk them is that it’s taking Tsuyoshi so long when he does it. Also, Tsuyoshi can’t reject any call from Misuzu, even if he’s in the restroom.
    • Kawamoto sees the mail Yuuko sent to Matsunaga reminding him to brush his teeth properly, remarking that they come off as a very close couple. To a Westerner, it would look more as if she were parenting him instead, and hence somewhat disturbing.
    • A Westerner seeing Tsuyoshi’s boss finally having enough of his poor work ethic and unproductivity and deciding to fire him against the CEO’s son’s wishes, insisting instead of grovelling like he usually does would probably side with the boss, to some extent (given his Jerkass behaviour). A Japanese person watching this would see firing Tsuyoshi as a horrible humiliation that definitely counts as Disproportionate Retribution, given the massive taboo Japan has against firing people. He would be expected instead to make him join the madogiwazoku—strip him of all responsibilities and shun him away from other employees while still paying his salary.
  • The Woobie: The eponymous character, definitely; later almost everyone in the cast who isn't a Jerkass is revealed to be a Woobie to some extent.
