YMMV / Toy Story That Time Forgot

Go To

  • Accidental Aesop: As per the Everyone Is Jesus in Purgatory symbolism, trying to carve out your own purpose in life is evil and harmful; only by "surrendering" to a higher power can a meaningful life be achieved. There's also a more benign one about video games vs. imagination.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Played for Laughs when the Battlesaurs break into a song number as their anthem, implied to be their commercial theme song.
  • Creepy Cute: The toys find Angel Kitty's almost monotone holiday platitudes kind of unnerving.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Angel Kitty and her adorability became rapidly incredibly popular with fans crying out for a plush toy of her. Which they got.
Angel Kitty: "The joy that you give others is the joy that comes back to you."
  • Everyone Is Jesus in Purgatory: The religious symbolism from the original trilogy continues, especially in the film's climax.
    • The story rests heavily on such themes as trust and faith in a higher purpose.
    • Trixie is unsatisfied with the roles Bonnie gives her, wanting desperately to be able the play the part of a dinosaur. When she finds the Battlesaurs, she gets to play the part she always wanted, but finds out that the Battlesaurs are actually living a false existence. Only by showing the Battlesaurs the truth of who they are and convincing them to "surrender" to a child's imagination, can they live truly fulfilling lives.
  • Fridge Horror: The ventilation cover with the spinning blade beneath was rather easy to remove, seeing as they were tiny toys. Think how easy it would be for two certain curious little kids playing in the room, to remove it and stick their hands down it.
  • Genius Bonus: When the toys face certain death in the ventilation shaft if Trixie doesn't fetch Bonnie in time Angel Kitty plays a mournful tune on her trumpet. Older viewers may recognize this as "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel", a Christmas carolnote  on the theme of hoping for a savior to come and deliver everyone from their troubles.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Every time Angel Kitty speaks up. She's just so honestly adorable that even characters from the Raptorian Guards to a grouch like Potato Head can't help but be charmed by her.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • The cleric could be this for younger kids, as could the Battlesaur guards, especially when they chant and pound their spears while the toys are led to "The Pit."
    • When the Sock Puppet is Seemingly torn to shreds offscreen, of course it survives with only it's arms destroyed, but we don't know that until the end. The darkness of that scene is almost up there with the climax of Toy Story 3, as one of the darkest moments in the franchise, because as far as we knew, we saw a toy die off-screen for the first time (Unless you count Combat Carl from the first movie)
    • The toy heads impaled on sticks is rather dark too, notably for a Disney Christmas special.
  • Popular with Furries: Reptillus Maximus got quite a bit of fanart from scalies.
  • Toy Ship: Bonnie immediately takes up Mason's offer to play video games and throws her toys to the side without giving a second thought. YMMV on whether it's the flashy, expensive game set or Mason himself that draws her in so fast.
