YMMV / Touhou Chireikiden ~ Foul Detective Satori

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: In a meta sense, Mizuchi being introduced as the Big Bad, due to the Bait-and-Switch where it seemed like it would be Mima. Either this is ZUN's idea of a prank, or it's his way of getting the point across that he's never going to bring Mima back and people should stop asking for it.
  • Ass Pull: A lot of people felt Kaguya having been possessed since before the beginning of the Eientei arc was this. Kaguya had never been shown to leave Eientei to visit the Human Village before, so nobody could piece it together that she was the host. People don't mind this aspect of her character being revealed, mind you, but it just doesn't work for a mystery story such as this.
  • Arc Fatigue: Between the short chapter length and monthly release schedule, Foul Detective Satori is a very slow-paced manga. Each arc takes about half a year to be published, and very little actually happens in much of them until The Reveal, consisting mostly of characters vaguely trying to understand what's going on. It did not help when the artist went on hiatus for two months in 2022 after leaving events on a huge cliffhanger. With each arc covering one game, the earliest the story could reasonably be resolved at this rate would be 2028, assuming no future titles are announced.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Mizuchi Miyadeguchi is either loved by fans for her intimidating design, and being one of the closest characters the series has to a Knight of Cerebus, or is hated as an overpowered villain with confusing motives and inconsistent rules to possessing people. There's also the people who were hoping the manga would finally have the return of Mima, only to be disappointed (once again) by the new character.
  • Common Knowledge: It's often claimed by fans that the manga rendered Outdated by Canon Flandre's prior Ax-Crazy characterization in most Fanon by showing her as an innocent Little Miss Snarker who stays in the basement voluntarily. In actuality, Flandre is shown throughout the first arc to be downright sociopathic, doing things like complimenting Sakuya when she thinks she attempted to murder Patchouli, and violently strangling Meiling while Laughing Mad after noticing some kind of power within her, then being visibly disappointed when it turns out she's just under Demonic Possession. It's also made clear by Sakuya's surprised reaction that Flandre's voluntary imprisonment is strictly a secret between her and Remilia and not something the other people in the mansion are aware of, implying the entire reason the myth is maintained is to make sure no one ends up being killed going near her.
  • Fanon: Since Mizuchi's color palette was never revealed for almost a year after her debut (until finally being revealed in December 2022, nine months after her first appearance), a number of fans either gave her their own color scheme, or made her Deliberately Monochrome.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Quite a few people were only interested in the first arc due to it being centered around the Scarlet Devil Mansion Cast Herd, who'd spent practically all the 2010s Out of Focus. Specific note goes to Flandre, who ends up making her first non-cameo appearance in a piece of official material since her introduction, a good 17 years ago.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Despite being the title character and a major fan favourite, Satori spends most of the manga Out of Focus, having very little actual screentime of any significance.
