YMMV / Too Late.exe

Go To

  • Fanon: Fans like to assume that Too Late is a continuation of I HATE YOU due to the fact Luigi dies by falling in lava in both of them. However, this has ultimately been Jossed due to Mr. Pixel confirming that the stories are unrelated.
  • Fridge Brilliance: MX from Mario '85 cameos as one of the NPCs in World 2's secret level. You'd think he'd be a threat there like in his home game? He just hides behind a tree, because he exclusively targets children, and every other NPC in said level look like adults, so he has no reason to go after them, much less Mario.
  • Fridge Horror:
    • Who else is aware of the context behind Luigi's death besides Mario and Mr. L? A few of the NPCs in World 2's secret level seem to know, but did Princess Peach and the Toads know as well?
    • MX shows up in the secret level of all places. Beyond his funny line where he's thinking he's in the wrong game, and the fact he only goes after children and hence isn't attacking anyone, note how he's hiding behind a tree. The secret level is implied by an NPC to be a hiding place, mainly from Mr. L, which could additionally imply even MX, a full-fledged Eldritch Abomination, fears him.
    • After the game ends, it is heavily implied Mr. L doesn't move on to the afterlife after killing Mario, who he was haunting to begin with. With the knowledge of just how dangerous he is, what remains of the Mushroom Kingdom will have a serious problem on their hands.
  • Fridge Sadness: Too Late is set in Super Mario Bros. 3, and it's later revealed that Luigi's death happened back in the first Super Mario Bros.. That meant Mario had to soldier on through Super Mario Bros. 2 (granted, it's set in a dream, but that's not much better), maybe even Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels without him. Is it any wonder the poor guy's horribly depressed?
  • Realism-Induced Horror: To a certain degree. Despite being zigzagged due to the supernatural circumstances that brought Mr. L back from death, the lengthy torment he inflicts on his brother as revenge over an Accidental Murder, one that said brother is clearly suffering for to the point it culminates in his death is utterly terrifying and entirely real. MX's cameo makes things worse, as MX is an Eldritch Abomination that takes Mario as an avatar, but Mr. L? He's still Luigi. No possessions, no demons, no viruses, just a human so driven by The Power of Hate over being the victim of an Accidental Murder that he goes to make his brother's life hell, and continues doing the same for potential victims long after his death, serving as a surprisingly terrifying example on how revenge can destroy your very soul.
  • Tear Jerker: A small one, but one that establishes the tone of the game moving forward. Super Mario Bros. 3's familiar title screen starts up, except Mario is looking distressed, and there's no music. Nor sound for that matter. Then, after the Koopa shell drops on Mario's head, what does he look up at? Luigi's cap, gently floating down like a feather, which Mario jumps up to grab moments after... then breaks down in tears as he clutches it, and kneels down.
  • The Woobie: Mario is clearly struggling to keep it together after Luigi's death... and then he meets Mr. L. Mr. L makes it his mission to torment Mario as much as possible. He bites Mario's head off in the first level, tosses him into a hellhole of a world, keeps trying to murder him, and taunts him with the words "too late". When all is said and done, Mr. L forces Mario to relive his memory of hastily cutting the bridge in Bowser's castle while Luigi was on it, accidentally leading to his death, on top of revealing he is said dead brother, and hence Mario was feeling immense guilt for what he did prior to the events of the game. Even when Mario apologizes to Mr. L in tears, he refuses it, and kills him for good in the same manner he died.
    Mr. L: Something to say?
    Mario: I... I'm... I'm sorry, brother.
Mr. L: Too late to apologize. [breaks the bridge Mario is on, sending him plummeting into the lava below]
