- Adaptation Displacement: This is based on one of the (considered) lesser novels of Ernest Hemingway, and though the movie changes a lot of it, it's better remembered than the novel.
- In 1950, there was a more faithful movie version called The Breaking Point, with John Garfield and Patricia Neal, that was well received, but isn't as well known today.
- Award Snub: It received zero Academy Award nominations.
- Memetic Mutation:
- "You know how to whistle, don't you Steve? You just put your lips together and blow."
- Also, "Was you ever bit by a dead bee?"
- Narm: Lauren Bacall had a quite awkward singing voice, sounding close to Kermit the Frog on some lines. The studio suggested she be dubbed, but Humphrey Bogart insisted the real thing be used.
