YMMV / Titane

Go To

  • Audience-Alienating Premise: The movie follows a serial killer who, in the opening twenty minutes, has sex with a car and gets pregnant with its child, which became one of the film's most talked about aspects. While the majority of the movie is fairly understated and only lightly surreal until the ending, it's hard for general audiences to look past that opening.
  • Award Snub: It was France's selection for the Best International Feature category at the Academy Awards. But although a foreign film winning the Palme d'Or often nets it at least a nomination for Best International Feature, Titane was snubbed.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Alexia, naturally, has become a huge one to audiences. There are those who love her very odd and at times unexpectedly poignant character journey and Rouselle's mostly physical and largely wordless performance, as well as the compelling portrait of unconventional gender identity and presentation... but then there are those who find her to be nothing but a monster who's given one of the most ridiculous and incoherent redemption arcs imaginable, feeling that the director is trying too hard to have it both ways by having an intentional Villain Protagonist who is far too Easily Forgiven despite never confronting the real-world consequences of her many crimes.
  • Epileptic Trees: Is Justine (played by Garance Marillier) the same character from Raw, who is also played by Marillier? Word of God has stated that they just happen to share a same name (and the same actress), but that hasn't stopped fans from speculating.
  • Jerkass Woobie:
    • For those that are more neutral on Alexia overall, this tends to be their most common interpretation of her character, especially with the mystery of how her head trauma permanently affected her mental outlook.
    • Her father too, even as a very distant and disapproving parent he's clearly shown to be wracked with guilt over his role in her traumatic childhood injury (and hints that their relationship was strained even before the accident occurred).
  • Jerks Are Worse Than Villains:
    • The guy that stalks and forcefully kisses Alexia after the car show definitely goes beyond the level of any average creepy simp and is rightly considered a Hate Sink, while Alexia (herself a Serial Killer who brutally murders him, and then several others for no real apparent reason and never answers or apologizes for her crimes)... somehow is not.
    • Can be seen to a lesser extent with one of the firefighters who discovers Alexia's secret and who tries to confront her and turn her in. He's viewed as somewhat of a Nefarious Do-Gooder who Vincent ultimately has to murder surreptitiously to protect Alexia, but definitely comes across more as a Designated Villain or Strawman Has a Point since there's complete justification to having Alexia answer to her crimes and get justice for the grieving families, even if he may have selfish reasons for doing so.
  • Nausea Fuel: Many moments in the film are shot to be as brutal and stomach-churning to watch as possible, but special attention has been paid to the scene where Alexia breaks her own nose to hide her identity.
  • Quirky Work: The director's previous film Raw was already unconventional, but this is a very clear Weird Thing from France, specially as a central aspect involves a woman being impregnated by a car.
  • She Really Can Act: This is Agathe Rousselle's first leading role and many critics and audiences alike praised her silent, agonized performance in the second half of the movie.. Some even compared her performance with Maria Falconetti as Joan of Arc in The Passion of Joan of Arc.
  • Signature Scene: As you might expect from a movie where a lady literally has sex with a car, the scene in question has received most of the attention.
  • Spiritual Adaptation: For Magic: The Gathering players, Alexia is the closest thing to a Phyrexian that they will ever see on the big screen — and also a good example of why an adaptation of certain storylines wouldn't be suitable for many fans, especially underage ones.
  • Tear Jerker: Despite everything she did, Alexia's death is devastating, especially when she finally found a family that wanted her and was changing her ways.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Justine, especially since she was played by Raw's breakout lead Garance Marillier.
  • Trans Audience Interpretation: There are some fans who look at Alexia/"Adrien"'s arc and see a story with transmasc beats.
