YMMV / The Wrong Trousers

  • Awesome Music: The entire score is a huge step up from the synthesized music from "A Grand Day Out". It has a great horror feel to it, with the exception of the Train Chase sequence, which is set to comical ragtime.
  • Growing the Beard: Starting with this film, Wallace became much more of a tinkerer and an inventor, Gromit became more of an archetypal Silent Snarker and the animation is much better.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Feathers' notoriety with the police is him pulling off heists while disguised as a chicken. Aardman Animations would later make a film about chickens breaking out from a chicken farm and later breaking into another chicken farm in a heist-style plot. For bonus points, Feathers McGraw makes The Cameo in the later film as a disguised chicken.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Feathers McGraw is a penguin who imitates a chicken while committing robberies. Taking advantage of Wallace’s hospitality, Feathers, instantly savvy to Gromit, drives him out of the house by making him think he’s being replaced, and then traps Wallace in the reprogrammed electronic trousers that Wallace gave Gromit as a birthday present and runs him wild through the town. Feathers then uses Wallace to steal a diamond from the museum and when confronted by Gromit with a rolling pin, pulls a gun on Gromit. Feathers then narrowly escapes during a harrowing pursuit on a train set while nearly outsmarting Gromit at every turn.
  • Memetic Badass: Feathers gained some popularity during The New '20s in video edits where he's described as a "Sigma Male" and compared to characters such as Patrick Bateman and Tyler Durden of all people.
  • Memetic Mutation: A GIF of the scene where Gromit is laying down the toy train tracks as the train is moving is often used online as shorthand for making a plan up as it goes along.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Feathers crossed it when he pulled a revolver on Gromit and attempted to fire it at him and Wallace while trying to escape with the diamond he stole.
  • Signature Scene:
    • The model train chase, especially the part where Gromit lays out the track from the front of the moving train.
    • Gromit pouring a cup of tea, whacking the toaster button, and jam splattering onto a piece of toast in mid-air is very satisfying when replayed.
  • Tear Jerker: Feathers forcing Gromit out of his bedroom and eventually out of the house, prompting Gromit to undergo a Despair Event Horizon and leave the house. It provdes the franchise's page image.
  • Tough Act to Follow: A mild example. It's still near-universally considered the best in the series, but with the others all following close behind. A much bigger example is the short's villain, Feathers McGraw, who's considered such an iconic character that none of the succeeding villains are anywhere near as well-remembered.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome:
    • The famous "track laying" scene is one long display of what is probably the most mundane setup to a practical effect ever: pushing the puppet slightly as the camera takes an exposure to create a believable and, more importantly, real, motion blur effect. And it looks amazing!
    • Gromit pouring a cup of tea, whacking the toaster button, and jam splattering onto a piece of toast in mid-air.
  • The Woobie: You're sure to feel sad for poor Gromit when he feels so pushed out by the manipulative Feathers that he has no choice but to run away from home.
