• Values Dissonance: Roger is downright creepy to modern readers. He's in love with Hetta despite being about twenty years older than her, and he fell in love with her when she was very young.
• The Woobie: Marie Melmotte. Her father is a conman, she has no idea what happened to her real mother, and she's courted by many men who only want her money. She falls in love with Sir Felix because she thinks he's different from the rest, but he sees her only as a way to get her father's money. It's hard not to feel sorry for her.
