• Germans Love David Hasselhoff: The film made its biggest box office success in North America and to this day this is the film most American film buffs associate with Ingmar Bergman. In addition the film found enduring popularity across the world and is often the movie that introduces Bergman to non-Swedish audiences.
• Vindicated by History: It barely made a splash in its native Sweden. However not only did it find more popularity across the world but it won the Best Picture for Foreign Film in the Academy Awards and is now seen fondly as one of Bergman's best movies even in his native Sweden and is considered the introductory art for people trying out Bergman or interested in seeing Swedish cinema. In addition it is often credited as codifying the Rape and Revenge genre.
