YMMV / The Valley of Fear

  • He's Just Hiding: "The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes" by Leslie S. Klinger quotes a theory by one Theodore W. Gibson that Douglas wasn't killed by Moriarty's agents at the end, but faked his own death (again).
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: John Douglas is also the name of a real life FBI profiler who revolutionized criminal profiling in the 70s. In Mindhunter, which is loosely based on Douglas's time in the FBI, the character based on Douglas is briefly referred to as the modern day Sherlock Holmes, and his partner (based on Robert Ressler, who coined the term Serial Killer) as Dr. Watson.
  • Values Dissonance: The Scowrers are shown to be purely villainous, while the hero of the story is a former Pinkerton detective. Nowadays, increased knowledge of some of the actions committed by the Pinkertons against miners in this era lend this story more of a Gray-and-Gray Morality in the modern era.
