We're clearly meant to be sympathetic towards him, since the letter is to his sister regarding their family, thus showing he's not a fanatic, but the letter also has him heavily detailing an upcoming military operation, thus potentially compromising its security. Several commentators on the forum state that this robs him of any real sympathy.
