YMMV / The Twilight Zone (1959) S3E29: "Four O'Clock"

Go To

  • Diagnosed by the Audience: There's something seriously off about Oliver given his intense paranoia, absolute worldview and massive ego and belief that he can "punish" evil doers and has every right to do so. At one point, Agent Hall even asks Oliver if he's ever sought psychiatric treatment.
  • Values Dissonance: With this being the 1960s, it would still be another two decades before anti-stalking laws would be in place. Nowadays, the FBI agent would have just cause to immediately arrest Oliver Crangle and charge him with felony stalking.
  • Values Resonance:
    • The main character of "Four O' Clock", Crangle, is a Conspiracy Theorist who harasses those he deems "communist" or otherwise "evil". 60 years later, Crangle's unhinged beliefs are now all too familiar to American viewers, who have seen equally baseless conspiracy theories.
    • Oliver Crangle's obsession with keeping tabs on people he doesn't even know in an effort to ruin their lives also feels a lot more poignant with the rise of "cancel culture," such as Conor Daly losing sponsors for things his father said in the 1980s.
