• Alternative Joke Interpretation:
  • Wiggum either made the exact mistake Ruth did by playing "Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows" in lieu of a cooler song and wound up getting into it, or that was the song he meant to play in the first place. Either way, point taken: he's a goof.
  • Is the near empty telethon meant to be a jab at public television and PBS? Or is it actually a Take That, Audience!, a moment of This Loser Is You for overly popular culture and mainstream sensation-obsessed viewers who don't take the time to pick up some culture and taste?
• Fridge Horror: The emergency team are unnervingly quick to cut off Homer's arms as the first solution to un-lodge him from the vending machines. Even lying to him that they'll "grow back." Combined with them referring to it as if something they've done before and the fact we see a skeletal arm inside one of the machines, it's safe to say several people in Springfield weren't saved Just in Time like Homer was.
• Hilarious in Hindsight: When Lisa and Bart are seeing Marge off as she heads out for her night out with Ruth, Bart yells after her, "Rock the Casbah!" Four seasons later, "Natural Born Kissers" would reveal that Homer and Marge use "Rock the Casbah" as a Sexual Euphemism, and Bart knows about it (asking "Did you rock the casbah?" after they return from a weekend getaway), retroactively making it seem as if he's suggesting that Marge should cheat on Homer while she's out partying. It actually feels like pretty warranted snark about the over-the-top Crazy Jealous Guy reaction Homer is having to Marge having a little fun without him.
  Homer: Man's best friend indeed.
• Memetic Mutation: Homer's "Always do opposite of what Bart says" card, often used on the internet with Bart's name replaced.
• Squick:
  • Homer kissing the giant pile of solid waste after he and Chief Wiggum are saved by it.
  • The skeletal arm still lodged in the vending machine. Imagine how that smelled when it was rotting flesh.
• They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Despite becoming close friends with Marge and having an adventure together, Ruth's only major appearance after this episode came ten years later, otherwise limited to non-speaking cameos.
