• Anvilicious: The final discussion between Kang and Kodos is basically two straight minutes of attacks on the Iraq War. In the original script, Kodos blatantly says it's about Iraq, but this was cut because it was too on-the-nose even for the producers.
• Fridge Brilliance: A bit meddled within the unsubtle commentary on the Iraq War, but the aliens were partly on to something when talking about 'weapons of mass disintegration', even if they don't believe it themselves. The War of the Worlds-inspired segment takes place in 1938, just before World War II, which among others led to one of the most prominent uses of nuclear weapons.
• Nightmare Fuel:
  • The final shot of the episode, with Springfield shown as a bombed out wasteland, with little signs of life remaining. And there are still explosions going off.
  • The mere thought of being swallowed and digested alive by the Homer blob. Especially the fate of the homeless man who was forcibly fed to Homer after his dog ran off.
