YMMV / The Simpsons S 11 E 3 Guess Whos Coming To Criticize Dinner

Go To

  • Aluminum Christmas Trees: Some fans probably don't realize Platypus Man and The Cosby Mysteries (the two shows Homer blames the television critic for getting cancelled) were both real shows (the ending of "Who Shot Mr. Burns?: Part 1" spoofed the latter with a Fourth Wall Psych).
  • Fans Prefer the New Her: Mr. Burns getting fat is portrayed as a bad thing when his shins collapse, but fans commented that he actually looked healthier with the weight on compared to his usually spindly and decrepit appearance, coupled with his jovial attitude.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: When Homer and Marge observe how fat everyone is getting due to his positive restaurant reviews causing people to eat more, the former proudly tells the latter that he's making a difference in people's lives. A later episode would have the town of Springfield be declared "America's Fattest Town" as a result of Homer's antics (It Makes Sense in Context), which embarrasses Marge so much that she pushes for a town-wide ban on sugar that leads to chaos.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Homer becomes an impossible-to-please restaurant critic who writes his reviews on an old-fashioned typewriter, and his opinions prove to be the kiss of death to any eatery that cannot meet his unreachable standards. In other words, he's Anton Ego.
  • Memetic Mutation: The moment where Lisa sees "the cane from Citizen Kane" on display in Planet Springfield, only to realise "there was no cane in Citizen Kane", has been used for various memes and shitposts.
Wait a minute, there was no [blank] in [blank].
  • Unintentional Period Piece: At Planet Hollywood, Homer tries to tear up the script for The Cable Guy, accusing it of "nearly wrecking Jim Carrey's career.". Nowadays, The Cable Guy has been reevaluated, and now, many consider it a Cult Classic.
