YMMV / The Shnookums & Meat Funny Cartoon Show

Go To

  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Doris Deer, who only pops up in some of the Pith Possum segments, has more than a fair amount of fanart dedicated to her for reasons that aren't hard to figure out.
    • Also the backup segments themselves, Pith Possum and Tex Tinstar are better received and liked than the main segment/title characters.
  • Misaimed Marketing: More a case of misconceived marketing, the Shnookums and Meat canned pasta had this remarkable disclaimer on the label: "Meat is a character developed by Buena Vista Television. THERE IS NO MEAT IN THIS PRODUCT." This leads to some interesting Fridge Logic: Shouldn't they have been more concerned with assuring the customer that the product doesn't contain any "Shnookums"?
  • Nightmare Fuel: Night of the Living Shnookums had a morbid premise (Meat falsely believing that he'd killed Shnookums and trying to dispose of the body) and an inconclusive, borderline-horrifying ending: in the midst of the craziness, Shnookums may have actually killed Meat whose ghost or reanimated corpse may be menacingly knocking at the front door later on when Shnookums is home alone. The episode cuts to black without resolving this. It's especially shocking considering how tame the show normally was compared to other grossout shows of the time.
    Meat: Trick or treat, Shnookums...
  • Presumed Flop: The series is often lumped in among the failed attempts to capitalize on the success of The Ren & Stimpy Show. Yet evidence shows that it did fairly well as far as syndicated cartoons were concerned. The more likely factors leading to its present day obscurity are Disney suddenly choosing to bury it just before its premiere, likely a result of shifts in Disney's corporate management as a result of Jeffery Katzenburg leaving the company to found DreamWorks SKG the year before, as well as it being the only Disney Afternoon show to air only once a week throughout its entire runnote , not to mention Disney Channel never airing it outside of special airings to promote its less widely available sister network Toon Disney.
  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!: Widely accused of ripping off of The Ren & Stimpy Show. It bears noting however that Bill Kopp had never intended the show to be such; in an interview with DAF Radio, for example, he notes that, as much as he respects Ren & Stimpy and its impact, the show was generally more inspired by the likes of Tex Avery. The Ren & Stimpy connection came from Disney itself pushing it as a wackier, edgier cartoon from what they usually did at the time, as well as a number of former R&S people working on it.
