YMMV / The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich

Go To

  • Americans Hate Tingle: The book isn't very popular in Germany. Shirer believed this was because the Germans didn't want to own up to the misdeeds they committed while under Nazi rule.
  • Fair for Its Day:
    • Shirer, like many at the time, regarded homosexuality as "unnatural". With that said, he doesn't consider the Nazis' persecution of them to be justified in any way.
    • He's dismissive of the "clean Wehrmacht" myth, and he also expresses contempt for the idea that the Red Army only defeated the Germans thanks to sheer force of numbers and the Russian winter. This nearly landed him in hot water with Senator McCarthy, but the book sold so well that McCarthy backed off. While both concepts are utter horseshitnote , they were considered facts by western folks until historians finally began debunking them in the 1980s—over 20 years after this book came out.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Chapter 27 ("The New Order") describes Nazi atrocities, especially the Final Solution, in gruesome detail.
