• Alternate Character Interpretation: While Yelü Xian ordering his best friend's fiance to marry him instead looks like entitlement and ingratitude at first glance, Xian also had no choice politically speaking. Empresses traditonally have always come from the Xiao family. His main rivals for the throne Yansage and Xiyin have already married Xiao daughters. Xian also needs to marry a high status Xiao clanswoman to avoid appearing lesser to his uncle and cousin.
• Just Here for Godzilla: Some fans of The Untamed watched this series only because Meng Zi Yi has a minor role as Li Si.
• Moral Event Horizon: If he didn't cross it before, Yelü Jing definitely crosses it in episode twelve with what he does to Zhi Mo.
• Narm: The final episode includes Yan Yan's death at the age of fifty-six. Unfortunately the make-up department didn't even try to make her or anyone else look older.
• Special Effects Failure: The special effects are unconvincing when Xiao Chuo falls and De Rang jumps off his horse to catch her.
• The Woobie:
  • Hu Nian. She's forced to marry Yansage to save one of her sisters. Then her other sister deceives her and uses her to help Xian, which endangers Yansage and by extension Hu Nian, and leads to Hu Nian threatening suicide to save Yansage. Then Yansage tries to murder Yan Yan's baby, then Hu Nian suffers a miscarriage... Things just get worse for her from then on: Yansage dies, Wuguli commits suicide, Hu Nian falls in love with A Bo who also dies, and finally Yan Yan dies and leaves Hu Nian as the last survivor of their family.
  • Zhi Mo. For the dreadful crime of falling in love with one of his uncle's maids he loses an eye, is castrated, and is thrown down the stairs.
    • Women of the palace, even maids were considered to be property of the Emperor. While the maids were not untouchable like consorts and concubines it was still against the law to have an affair with one without getting the Emperor's permission first.
