At the climax, Lohmann entirely fails to prevent Baum-Mabuse from setting fire to the chemical works, which according to Mabuse's notes would kill thousands of local residents with poisonous fumes. However, Baum and Lohmann both spend some time running around the burning works with no kind of protection, and experience no more than the odd coughing fit, suggesting that the fumes weren't that bad.
