YMMV / The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996)

Go To

  • Fan-Preferred Cut Content: It's unanimously agreed that Richard Stanley's version of the film would have been better.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: In-story, every single bad thing that eventually happens on the island can be traced to Montgomery, Val Kilmer's character, being an asshole who thinks everything revolves around him and should cater to his tastes. During production, Val Kilmer's antics and antagonising behaviour were one of the chief reasons why the production turned into such a nightmare.
  • Narm: After Moreau is killed, Montgomery starts dressing like Moreau (complete with makeup and stuffing towels under his shirt to mimic his gut) and mockingly mimicking his grandiose speeches. While this is ridiculous enough on its own, instead of mimicking the British accent Marlon Brando had given Moreau, Val Kilmer does a stereotypical Marlon Brando impression, making it abundantly clear this isn't as much Montgomery mocking Moreau but rather Kilmer mocking Brando.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The Humanoid Abomination llama baby.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: Pretty much any discussion about the film is guaranteed to bring up the notoriously bad production.
  • Retroactive Recognition:
  • Took the Bad Film Seriously: While it's a disaster overall, you can't say it's because of the performances of David Thewlis, Fairuza Balk, and Ron Perlman. All three give performances that are better than the film probably deserves.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: As bad as the movie is, at least Stan Winston's make-up for the hybrids is impressive.
