YMMV / The Ice Princess

Go To

  • Designated Villain: Princess Zmarlina is portrayed as the antagonist of the story because she refuses to marry. Although the princess has an arrogant and obnoxious personality, and there's also the fact that she doesn't seem to care about the horrible curse that will fall if she refuses to marry, that doesn't erase the fact that she's being forced to marry a man she doesn't know and isn't attracted to (and his feeling for her is the same).
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Princess Zmarlina, partly because her spoiled and cruel personality causes some laughter, as does her crush on Mickey.
  • Fridge Horror: Princess Zmarlina in love with Mickey is initially just a source of comic relief, until you realize in detail the possible consequences of this. When Mickey tries to refuse Princess Zmarlina's marriage proposal, she says that not only does she care about the horrible fate of single men for not marrying one of her people (they will all melt away) but she will also have the portal sealed to prevent Mickey from returning to his world. Mickey would be trapped in a universe where everyone is made of ice, married to a horrible woman whose physical contact makes him shiver with cold, never seeing Minnie and his friends again, and hundreds of ice men dying because of him. How lucky that the princess's true suitor appears at that moment and solves everything...
  • Moral Event Horizon: Designated Villain aside, Princess Zmarlina crosses this line when she decides to have the portal that leads from the ice world to the human world sealed, to prevent Mickey, with whom she fell in love, from returning to his world.
  • Rooting for the Empire: Considering that Princess Zmarlina is a young woman being forced to marry a man she doesn't know and yet has the fact that neither of them is attracted to each other... well, many readers believed she was right.
  • Signature Scene: The princess hugging and kissing Mickey against his will.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character:
    • The princess Zmarlina could have been a recurring character, being a love interest and comic relief. Unfortunately, this is her only comic appearance.
    • Minnie is skiing with Mickey early in the story when he ends up entering the realm of ice people, and disappears for the rest of the story. For some reasons, the writers don't seem to realize that Minnie walking in the realm with him and dying of jealousy at seeing the princess flirting with Mickey and kissing him could be hilarious.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: The story tries to portray the princess as the antagonist and a horrible person... but when you remember that she is being forced to marry a man she doesn't know because of the curse, you realize she has good reason to be angry.
  • Values Dissonance: The story ends with the Princess falling in love with her ice suitor when he yells at her, insults her and tells her to change her behavior. You don't have to think hard to realize how wrong this message is.
