YMMV / The Hu

Go To

  • Common Knowledge: The Hu's logo is frequently mistaken for a dragon, but Producer Dashka clarified that it's actually a snow leopard, an important folkloristic symbol among Mongolic and Turkic cultures. It is the emblem of Tatarstan for example.
  • Gateway Series: The HU's popularity led to an increasing interest towards Mongolian folk music and, in general, overtone singing techniques, even though they aren't uniquely Mongolian (they're also practiced by some Turkics or by Inuit for example). Until then, both things were absolute niche outside their countries of origin, with the possible exception of Tengger Cavalry.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff:
    • The HU are (unsurprisingly) very popular in Mongolia, but received an enormous international audience, despite singing only in Mongolian and basing their texts on Mongolian folklore and culture.
    • Due to cultural affinities and friendly relationships, the band has a strong following from Turkic peoples, who are understandably enthusiastic to see a band from a fellow Altaic country gaining international acclaim.
  • Values Dissonance: Genghis Khan is perceived rather negatively in the Western world and horribly in Iranic and Arabic countries, where he's generally considered a bloodthirsty and genocidal conqueror. In Mongolia, however, he's hailed as a national hero, as he managed to unify the disjointed Mongol tribes and create a powerful empire under a strict but fair rule. His role in Mongolian history could be compared to that of Charlemagne in Western Europe. Considering this, is not surprising how The HU frequently praise him in their songs.
