- Fridge Brilliance: Elendil's support for Rhaenyra in the Dance of the Dragons helped to officially crown her as Rhaenyra I, the reign of which should have affected Westerosi history to a greater degree than it did. But given the death toll of the Winter Fever, which struck shortly after the Dance had concluded, it is likely that Rhaenyra was one of the victims, along with her Velaryon sons that survived the civil war.
- Rooting for the Empire: The author seems to have succeeded a little too well in making the Empire of Umbar seem impressive. The majority of readers are more excited to see Umbar in all its glory than anything back in Westeros and many say they would be perfectly happy seeing it conquer the place, or even the whole world.
