- Moral Event Horizon:
- Xiang Yun crosses it in her very first appearance when she has a servant beheaded for seeing her stumble.
- Lian Cheng crosses it when he rapes Xiang Yun.
- Narm:
- The first episode starts with various people screaming about Fu Ya's impending execution. Unfortunately their over-dramatic reactions detract from the situation's seriousness.
- Later in episode one a group of soldiers somehow fail to notice other soldiers approaching them. On horseback. Without making any attempt to move quietly. The first group only notice the others when they're right behind them.
- Squick: Qi You falls in love with Fu Ya, who looks exactly like his adoptive mother. Try not to think too hard about that.
- Special Effects Failure: When Fu Ya gets pushed off a cliff it's painfully obvious she isn't actually falling.
- The Woobie: Fu Ya. She's forced to watch helplessly as her mother is trapped in a burning room, she witnesses her uncle murder her father, she sees her father's head on display, and then she has to watch her adoptive parents be tortured and killed for trying to protect her.
