YMMV / The Girl in the Spider's Web

Go To

  • Audience-Alienating Premise: For many, the thought of a sequel to David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo without Fincher's involvement was a deal-breaker, while others weren't happy about Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig being replaced by different actors. The announcements of Claire Foy as Lisbeth, coming off an acclaimed run on The Crown, and director Fede Álvarez (whose 2016 horror film Don't Breathe was well-received), however, caused some to come around to the new film.
  • Complete Monster: Jan Holtsen, once a subordinate of Lisbeth Salander's Human Trafficking, mass murdering father Zalachenko, is now the right hand of her twin sister Camilla. Mutilating and torturing anyone who gets on his bad side, Holtsen murders a programmer who created Firefall, which gives access to the world's nuclear codes. Leading further death and torture, Holtsen plans to deliver it to Camilla to burn the world for his own advancement, and happily tortures Mikael Blomqvist for the end result.
  • Continuity Lockout: It's the second American movie... but adapts the fourth book. Hence, refererences to things that happened in the second and third novels, themselves adapted in Swedish movies, such as the capture and death of Lisbeth's criminal father, come out of nowhere for the uninitiated.
  • Signature Scene: Lisbeth being vacuum packed in latex.
  • Tough Act to Follow: To both the highly acclaimed Swedish trilogy and the successful American remake.
